Lexington’s Roads Take a Hit: Closures Due to Maintenance and Flooding

Hey there, Lexington! If you’re planning to hit the road anytime soon, you might want to pay attention. The Lexington Police Department has announced some important road closures that drivers need to keep in mind. These adjustments could affect your evening and morning commute.

When and Where?

Starting tonight, from 9 PM Monday night until 6 AM Tuesday morning, the eastbound lanes of the 5300 block of Sunset Boulevard/US 378 will be closed for necessary roadway work. Additionally, the left turning lane along Mineral Springs will also be out of commission. So, if you usually take these routes, make sure to plan ahead and consider alternative paths to avoid getting stuck in traffic.

Flooding Alert in Columbia

Meanwhile, nearby Columbia is facing their own challenges. Due to significant rainfall, flooding has led to some major road closures around town. Officials have announced that Whaley Street is closed from Assembly Street to Sumter Street, and Main Street is closed from Catawba Street to Whaley Street.

Reports indicate that the intersection of Main Street and Whaley Street is currently experiencing flooding. Drivers approaching this area should be extra cautious as the Columbia-Richland Fire Department is actively involved in managing the situation.

Traffic Redirection and Caution

With all the heavy rain, the Columbia Police Department has been forced to redirect traffic at the intersection of Blossom Street and Huger Street. To make matters worse, the Blossom Street bridge is also closed due to flooding, imploring drivers to expect some delays.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department has reported several additional road closures due to the rising waters. Here’s a quick list of some areas to avoid:

  • All lanes are closed near the 10000 block of Two Notch Road.
  • Trenholm at O’Neil is closed due to floodwaters.
  • Firelane at Lowe’s off of Two Notch is also flooded.
  • Shakespeare Road is currently underwater.
  • Both Two Notch at Oakcrest Drive and the adjacent railroad track are closed.
  • North Trenholm at Forest Drive is experiencing flooding as well.

Rescue Operations and Safety Measures

In one dramatic incident, a driver had to be rescued from floodwaters on Key Road, right next to Williams-Brice Stadium. Remember, safety is key during these tumultuous times. The South Carolina Department of Transportation has also stepped in, closing Forest Drive near the bridge over Gills Creek due to rising water levels.

And that’s not all! The Columbia Public Works Department has reported downed power lines across 20 roadways, which will remain closed until their safety can be guaranteed. If you come across a traffic light that’s out, treat it as a four-way stop for safety.

Helpful Tips for Residents

To lend a hand to residents impacted by the storm, the City of Columbia has staged dumpsters near community parks. If you have small limbs or yard debris, feel free to dispose of them there. Regular waste and recycling operations resumed at 10 AM after ensuring it was safe to do so.

Looking Ahead

Keep in mind that the Lexington Police Department is also planning further road closures this Friday due to downed trees. Plus, if you live around South Congaree, mark your calendar! The South Carolina Department of Transportation will close Pine Street starting November 4, 2024, for bridge repairs lasting about a week. Be sure to follow the detour routes!

So, Lexington folks, stay safe out there! Keep your eyes peeled for signs and road crews, and let’s navigate these road challenges together!
