Lexington School District Two Unveils State-of-the-Art Arts Facility

In a move poised to revolutionize the arts education in Lexington County, Lexington School District Two will soon be opening doors to its 103,400-square-foot performing arts center and district office. This remarkable $52 million construction is expected to be fully operative in May 2024.

A Substantial Investment for the Future of Arts

The grand development that stands as a testament to the district’s commitment to nurturing the arts and education is located at 3205 Platt Springs Road, in the Springdale area of West Columbia. The facility—buoyed with state-of-the-art stage lighting and sound systems, dressing rooms, set storage, and backstage areas—promises to provide an exceptional level of support for various art forms such as dance, music, and theatre.

Catering to a Wide Range of Events

This modern infrastructure is not only a performing arts center but will also serve as the district office. Designed to accommodate over 1,500 occupants in its two-level balcony, the center will host performances, special events, district-wide celebrations, professional development sessions, statewide conferences, conventions, student competitions, and various community and cultural events.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Artists

Another notable ambition of this center is its focus on providing Lexington Two students with a chance to perform in a world-class space, learn behind-the-scenes aspects of performances, and connect with professionals in the industry. As put by District 2 Superintendent Brenda Hafner, “We’re really appreciative to our taxpayers for being willing to invest in our community and invest in our children… They’ll know that the money was well spent and it’s very beneficial for our community.”

The Final Phase of a Long-Term Plan

Representing the culmination of a 10-year, $225 million bond referendum approved by voters in 2014, this facility is indeed a significant achievement. Prior phases had already witnessed the establishment of three new schools and the district’s Innovation Center, accompanied by various upgrades across the district.

Over its 103,400-square-feet area, the performing arts center occupies 71,800 square feet, bedecked with a grand lobby on the ground floor, an additional lobby on the second floor, and four meeting spaces. The Lexington Two district office will utilize the remaining 31,600 square feet of the building.

With this recent development, it’s evident that Lexington’s focus on arts education remains steadfast. The promise of a well-rounded arts education within the thriving community is a testament to Lexington’s continued commitment to student success.
