Railroad Work Temporarily Closes Key Lexington County Crossings

The completion of important railroad maintenance across Lexington County has resulted in the temporary closure of several essential crossings, causing disruptions within the local area. The maintenance work was conducted by CSX, a leading rail-based freight transportation company, and involved significant portions within Newberry and Richland counties.

Detailed Maintenance Work

Beginning from February 5, the railroad work involved various closures along St. Andrews Road in Columbia, Lake Murray Boulevard in Irmo, and Lexington Avenue in Chapin. Despite the inconvenience, officials have reported that the work ran without any complaints or significant challenges. Initiated by CSX, the railroad operations were announced earlier in January and their progress updated as needed.

Effects on Local Areas

The town of Irmo was one area notably affected by the disruptions, with the blockage of several crossings, including one which obstructed the bus lot at Irmo High School. The town successfully provided residents with updates on the closures and advised detour routes through various social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.

Danielle McNaughton, from the town’s communications department, acknowledged that although closure durations were first estimated to last three to five days, most were completed within just two to three days.
