Columbia, S.C. Mourns the Loss of Legendary Broadcaster Joe Pinner at 89

It is with heavy hearts that the community of Columbia, South Carolina, remembers Joe Pinner, a cherished figure in local broadcasting, who sadly passed away at the age of 89 this past weekend. His family shared the news on Sunday, revealing that Joe left this world peacefully, surrounded by his sons, Michael and Gregg. The family expressed their profound sorrow, stating: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our Father Joe Pinner.”

Joe Pinner was not just a familiar face on television; he was a beloved personality who connected with countless families across the Midlands. He is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, along with his treasured grandchildren: Allen, Christopher, Danica, and Lauren.

A Journey Through Broadcasting

Joe’s journey in broadcasting began at a tender age of 15, when he worked at radio stations in New Bern and Morehead City, North Carolina. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of North Carolina and later joined WCHL, a radio station in Chapel Hill. By 1955, Joe had moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where he continued to flourish in his career before serving a two-year stint in the Army. It was during this time at Fort Jackson in Columbia that he managed the Armed Forces Radio station WFJX.

In 1963, Joe found his forever home at WIS, just a decade after the station first went on air. Over the next 55 years, he wore many hats, serving as an anchor, a weatherman, and co-host of WIS News Midday. His popular children’s program, “Mr. Knozit,” won him a national George Foster Peabody Award in 1967. Joe officially retired from WIS in 2018, leaving behind an impressive legacy and a dedicated viewership.

Devoted Family Man and Community Leader

Outside of work, Joe Pinner was just as dedicated to his family as he was to his career. He shared 65 beautiful years of marriage with his late wife, Peggy, who passed away in 2022. The couple’s love story began when they met in 1956 while Peggy was performing as a singer on WJXT. Their partnership was a true testament to love and commitment.

Community involvement was at the heart of Joe’s identity. He was active in various organizations, including serving as narrator for South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra youth concerts. He was also a board member for several local initiatives, such as the Voice of AGAPE and South Carolina Safe Kids.

A Legacy of Awards and Honors

Throughout his career, Joe gathered a plethora of awards recognizing his significant contributions to broadcasting and community service. He received the prestigious Order of the Palmetto three times, South Carolina’s highest civilian honor. His legacy extends beyond local accolades; his star graces the Celebrity Walk of Fame in Myrtle Beach, a testament to his impact.

Remembering a Legend

As news of his passing spreads, many are coming forward to share their fond memories of Joe Pinner. Notable figures including NBC anchor Craig Melvin and media personality Leeza Gibbons publicly honored Joe’s memory. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster remarked, “Columbia has lost an icon with the passing of Joe Pinner. He was a beloved member of our community.”

Carl Blackstone from the Columbia Chamber added, “Joe Pinner was the voice of a generation… he left an indelible mark in the Midlands region and will be sorely missed.”

A memorial service to celebrate Joe Pinner’s remarkable life is planned for early November. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Joe and Peggy Pinner Charitable Fund, ensuring that his legacy of giving continues.

As we bid farewell to Joe Pinner, we are reminded of the countless lives he touched and the joy he brought to families through his work.
