Irmo Prepares to Honor Heroes in Upcoming Tunnel to Towers 5K

IRMO, S.C. — Excitement is building in Irmo as the annual Tunnel to Towers 5K race approaches. On Friday, September 13th, 2024, runners from all around will lace up their sneakers to honor first responders, military service members, and the brave 343 FDNY firefighters who lost their lives in the tragic events of September 11th, 2001.

Young Hero Running for Those Who Serve

A standout participant this year will be 11-year-old Brooks Mixson, an honorary firefighter from Irmo. Brooks is not just excited about running; he plans to run again in 2024 to pay tribute to those who serve our communities every day, including the firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice.

This young boy isn’t new to the world of firefighting. He has spent years hanging around the Irmo Fire Department, absorbing everything he can about fire safety and the duties that come with being a firefighter. Brooks shared, “I’ve been with the firefighters since I was about five years old. They are like family to me.” This closeness with the fire department has undoubtedly fueled his passion for honoring those who protect and serve.

A Journey to Remember

At just 11, Brooks has already had a poignant experience that amplifies the significance of the upcoming race. Earlier this year, in April 2024, he visited the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York City. This trip solidified his determination to honor the sacrifices made during that fateful day. “Seeing the memorial really touched my heart,” he said. “I feel like I have a duty to run for them.”

Remembering a Local Hero

In addition to honoring the heroes of 9/11, Brooks will also pay tribute to Irmo firefighter James Muller, who tragically passed away while battling a 3-alarm fire in 2023. The loss of a local hero adds a deeply personal layer to the race for Brooks and the entire community. “It’s a really special day for me,” he expressed with sincerity. “It really means a lot to me and all these firefighters that work within the state and country.”
