Broad River Correctional Institution Inmate Found Guilty in Fatal Stabbing

COLUMBIA, S.C. – An inmate at Broad River Correctional Institution was found guilty of murder in connection with the deadly stabbing of another inmate.

Guilty Verdict for Dana Butler, Jr.

The Fifth Circuit Solicitor’s Office announced on Wednesday that Dana Butler, Jr., 32, was convicted by a Richland County Jury of murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and carrying or concealing a weapon by an inmate. Butler was charged in the fatal stabbing of 43-year-old Damon Doyle.

Details of the Incident

Officials revealed that Butler, who was already serving a 30-year sentence for an unrelated murder, engaged in a verbal altercation with Doyle before taking out a contraband shank. Butler proceeded to stab Doyle in the back and neck during the attack. The chilling incident was captured on surveillance video and presented as evidence during the trial.

After the stabbing, Butler reportedly taunted and chased Doyle before the victim managed to leave the dormitory for medical assistance. Tragically, Damon Doyle succumbed to his injuries and passed away as a result of the attack.

Sentencing and Consequences

The Honorable Robert Hood sentenced Butler to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder charge. In addition, Butler received a ten-year sentence for the weapon charge, to be served consecutively to the life sentence. This verdict ensures that Butler will remain behind bars for the rest of his life.

Investigation and Legal Proceedings

The investigation into the fatal stabbing was carried out by the South Carolina Department of Corrections Police Services Division. The case was prosecuted in Richland County, where the jury deliberated and reached a unanimous decision on the guilt of Dana Butler, Jr.

Final Thoughts

This tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers that can occur within correctional facilities. The loss of Damon Doyle is a stark example of the consequences of violence and conflict, even within the confines of a prison setting.

The legal process has now reached its conclusion, with Dana Butler, Jr., being held accountable for his actions through the judicial system. The verdict and sentencing provide a measure of justice for the victim and his loved ones, while also ensuring that the perpetrator will face the appropriate consequences for his crime.

As the community reflects on this incident, it is a time to mourn the loss of life and reexamine the importance of safety and security within correctional facilities. The hope is that steps can be taken to prevent similar tragedies in the future and to uphold the principle of accountability in all circumstances.
