Townville, SC – A tragic accident occurred on Thanksgiving Day, leading to the death of a 43-year-old man while he was hunting with his young son. The Anderson County coroner confirmed the incident on Friday, detailing the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate event.
The victim has been identified as Michael K. Roger from Townville. He was out hunting with his 11-year-old son at the time of the incident.
While hunting, Roger fell approximately 18 feet from a tree stand, prompting his son to call for help and initiate CPR. Emergency services arrived on the scene shortly after 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, responding to a 911 call concerning a man who had fallen and was unresponsive.
The accident occurred in the 8000 block of Highway 24 in Townville. First responders from Anderson County EMS, Medshore Ambulance Service, the Anderson County Fire Department, Lifeflight, and the Department of Natural Resources quickly mobilized to provide assistance.
The distressing event took place on Thanksgiving Day, specifically during the late afternoon hours, around 4:30 p.m. After initial resuscitation efforts on-site, Roger was transported to a nearby emergency room, where he succumbed to his injuries around 7 p.m.
An investigation into the incident revealed that Roger sustained a severe neck injury from the fall. The coroner’s office noted that he had been dealing with a recent sickness, which might have contributed to his accident. As a result, Roger’s death has been classified as accidental.
The Anderson County Office of the Coroner, in conjunction with the law enforcement division of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, is actively investigating the details of this incident.
