The weather might be a bit cloudy, with a slight chance of a rain shower, but the spirit within our community is undoubtedly bright. This time of year means a lot more than just decorations and celebrations for many individuals and organizations in Columbia. With Georgia Mjartan now steering the Central Carolina Community Foundation, a wave of community connection is about to unfold! Mjartan, who has been dedicated to public service since her teenage years, stresses the importance of volunteering during the holiday season, stating, “So many of our journeys of connection to nonprofits begins with volunteering.”
As we leap into December, numerous nonprofit organizations in our community are preparing for what can only be described as a “bustling holiday season.” Along with the recent challenges posed by a devastating hurricane and echoes of an election year, nonprofits are on their toes to respond to the community’s needs.
Holiday Giving Ramps Up
It’s no secret that the holiday months bring about a significant rise in volunteering and donations. In fact, research shows that volunteering rates can climb by as much as 50% during November and December! According to Erin Rowe, the CEO of Harvest Hope Food Bank, the underlying reasons are profound. “Everybody truly wants to open their hearts to help our neighbors, and it’s also a time of need with higher electricity bills and kids out of school,” she revealed. It speaks volumes about the generous spirit that blooms during the holidays.
Reflecting and Giving Back
Mjartan noted that this season encourages many to reflect on charitable giving as the year comes to a close. With the holiday vibe in full swing, individuals might begin considering how to best assist charitable initiatives — reminding us that even if you don’t have a lot to spare, every little contribution counts!

Chris Love, director of the Men’s Center program at Oliver Gospel Mission, highlighted the various emotions their guests face during the holidays. Many guests confront challenges tied to homelessness and strained family connections. Love and his team help prepare volunteers for these complexities, encouraging them to engage thoughtfully with those seeking assistance.
As the community faces increasing challenges, including economic hardships exacerbated by the pandemic, organizations like The FriendShip continue to strive to prevent isolation among the elderly and vulnerable populations. President Sam Waldrep emphasizes how changing circumstances can reshape the lives of individuals in need, further calling on residents to remain vigilant in their support for those around them.
Looking Ahead to the New Year
As 2024 approaches, the situation remains critical for many nonprofits. The Salvation Army, among others, has seen a significant uptick in individuals seeking help, a reality that Mark Craddock of The Salvation Army described as a result of a challenging economy. “We just have more need,” he admits candidly.
Despite these challenges, the camaraderie within the nonprofit world is notable. Organizations have come together for immediate relief efforts and are focusing on a long-term recovery as the community recovers from the effects of Tropical Storm Helene.
Year-Round Commitment to Service
While the holiday season may draw many volunteers to the table, leaders urge everyone to remember that the need persists well beyond December. As Rowe pointed out, “A lot of times, we really lose sight of the winter months, when our need is at its most peak level.” The call for action is clear — while turkey donations flood in around Thanksgiving, organizations remind us that there are essential items needed throughout the year.
