As the holiday season approaches, families in Columbia, South Carolina, are gearing up for joyful celebrations and fun festivities. Among the shining stars of this season is the Riverbanks Zoo & Garden, which has transformed into a dazzling wonderland with its annual Wild Lights Show. This unique event gives visitors a stunning twist on the traditional holiday light experience and packs it full of meaning!

A Sparkling New Approach

Taking place from now until January 12, the Riverbanks Zoo & Garden is serving up a spectacular display featuring over 60 brand new lanterns. According to Matt Perron, the zoo’s spokesperson, the show embodies the motto: “a little less Santa Claus and a little more animal claws.” While everyone loves a visit from the jolly old fellow, this year, the focus shifts towards endangered species and conservation.

The Wild Lights Show is only in its second year, but the zoo has a history of enchanting visitors with holiday attractions. Before this, they hosted a popular event called Lights over Riverbanks. Perron explained the pivot in focus: “You’ve got a juxtaposition of the holiday and nature. Deep down, people think of zoos as places you can go see animals, but for us, it’s a place where we breed endangered animals and help sustain these species.”

A Lesson in Conservation with Every Glow

The Riverbanks team emphasizes the critical role that zoos play in maintaining the genetics of endangered animals. Such efforts ensure that future generations can experience the magic of wildlife. “When you get to see lights that remind you that some of these animals need to be taken care of, it’s just a fun way to do it,” Perron added.

And while the exhibition has an inspiring message, it remains a joyous source of holiday delight for guests of all ages. Event Operations Manager Mike Collins mentioned, “Every single lantern that is in the zoo currently is new. So, there’s not a single copy of any lanterns that we had last year, so all 60 sets of lanterns are brand new.” Reinventing the experience year after year is key to capturing the magic of the season!

Plan Your Visit

The gates to this enchanting experience open daily at 5 p.m. and close at 9 p.m., providing ample opportunity for families to immerse themselves in the festive atmosphere. In addition, children can also catch a glimpse of the beloved Santa Claus every day leading up to December 23. Don’t you just love the way the holiday season brings everyone together?

So lace up those festive shoes and gather the family for an unforgettable night at the Riverbanks Zoo & Garden. Wild Lights offers not just a stunning visual display but also a chance to learn about the importance of protecting wildlife. Don’t miss the chance to experience this magical blend of holiday cheer and conservation!

The Riverbanks Wild Lights Show promises to be a highlight of the holiday season in Columbia and is an event the whole family will cherish. Let’s make this year’s holiday unforgettable!
