Columbia Breathes New Life into Historic 1880s Building
Exciting changes are underway in Columbia as a historic building that dates back to the 1880s is being transformed into a vibrant mixed-use space. The former laundry facility, which is the oldest surviving service building in the BullStreet District, is set to become one of the area’s focal points, offering a fusion of modern amenities and rich history.
A New Venue for Celebrations
At the heart of this renovation project is a stunning event venue aptly named The Laundry. Spanning over 7,000 square feet, this space will be perfect for weddings, receptions, and other gatherings. It promises to feature a charming atmosphere that includes exposed brick and antique heart pine wood beams, giving a nod to its storied past. The developers aim for The Laundry to be completed by December, just in time for the winter celebration season.
What’s even more exciting is that The Laundry will include two levels of event space. The main level will boast over 4,300 square feet and come complete with a bridal suite, a catering room, and fantastic views of the adjoining Babcock building’s iconic cupola. The upper level offers another 2,700 square feet of space, perfect for those looking to host events in a unique setting.
More Than Just an Event Venue
Alongside The Laundry, nearly 8,000 square feet will be dedicated to retail, restaurant, and office spaces. Although no tenants have been announced just yet, Todd Avant, managing partner of Avant Holdings, has expressed optimism, stating that they have been in talks with several potential businesses and is confident they will find suitable occupants within the next four months.
The Laundry is nestled conveniently at 2046 Talley St., just south of the Segra Park baseball stadium and directly behind the renovated Babcock building, which now houses hundreds of luxury apartments. This central location adds to the anticipated buzz surrounding the development and its surrounding areas.
A Step Towards Columbia’s Vision
The renovation of The Laundry is part of a larger, ambitious 20-year vision for the BullStreet District. This project, led by Greenville’s Hughes Development in collaboration with the city of Columbia, aims to revitalize the former State Mental Hospital campus, transforming it into a lively destination with residences, restaurants, retail outlets, offices, and even a new public park.
“Restoring the Laundry Building has been a labor of love,” said Avant. “We’ve worked meticulously to bring this historic building back to life—transforming it into a unique mixed-use development that honors its past while integrating modern amenities.” He emphasized the excitement in welcoming future events and businesses to The Laundry.
A Connection to the Past
The Grove, a spacious outdoor greenspace located within the development, will serve as an additional attraction. This lush lawn, shaded by mature trees, will be ideal for outdoor events and gatherings. Interestingly, this land has its own historical significance, having once been the site of a prison camp for Union soldiers during the latter part of the Civil War.
Community and Heritage Combined
This redevelopment effort has garnered positive feedback from local preservation advocates. John Sherrer, the director of preservation at Historic Columbia, noted that the rehabilitation of the laundry building provides a unique blend of modern utility while respecting and preserving its 19th-century architectural details. Sherrer remarked, “This historic laundry building—once an integral facet of daily operations at the former State Hospital—will assume a prominent role in the lives of contemporary residents and visitors to the BullStreet District.”
Robert Hughes, president of Hughes Development, expressed his enthusiasm for The Laundry’s potential role within the BullStreet campus, highlighting that it will not only maintain the building’s rich history but also create an exciting space for community gatherings and commercial ventures.
As Columbia prepares to embrace this new venue, it signals a bright future ahead for the BullStreet District and the city as a whole. Keep an eye out for the grand opening of The Laundry, as it promises to be a charming hub where history and modernity beautifully collide.
