High School Sports Update: Local Stars Shine in Recent Competitions

This week in Colonie and surrounding areas, high school athletes displayed remarkable talent across various sports, showcasing their skills in several exciting matches and tournaments.

In girls’ golf, senior Sienna Wheeler from Colonie made headlines by shooting a solid round of 78 in the Section II championships at Hiland Park in Queensbury. As she heads into the final round, Wheeler is tied for third place, looking to improve her standing on Friday.

Meanwhile, in football, senior Dominic DiBacco from Shaker had an impressive game, scoring three touchdowns on runs of 35, 2, and 50 yards despite his team’s 27-19 loss to Christian Brothers Academy. Other standout performances included Jacob Phelps from Averill Park, who rushed for 166 yards and one touchdown while also catching two touchdowns worth 104 yards, helping his team to a 47-12 victory over La Salle.

In another thrilling football match, Zavry Ward of Queensbury threw for 364 yards and six touchdowns to lead his team to a convincing 41-12 win over South Glens Falls.

Turning to girls’ soccer, Alina Lagace from Shaker made a significant contribution to her team’s win, scoring three goals and adding an assist in a 4-1 triumph against Averill Park.

In the realm of cross country, William Smitas from Guilderland emerged victorious at the Albany County Meet, clocking in at 13:09.9 minutes, while Charlotte O’Meara led the Bethlehem girls’ cross country team to a strong showing, finishing first in her race.

This weekend promises more action with key games and meets, and local athletes are looking to continue their impressive form. The community is encouraged to come out and support these talented young individuals as they give their all on the field, court, and course this season!
