Lake Forest High School Sports: A Thriving Community of Athletes
In Lake Forest, the excitement of high school sports is alive and well, with students participating in a wide range of athletic activities. For many, joining a sports team is more than just about competition; it’s about building friendships, staying active, and creating lasting memories.
One student shared their experience, noting how they participated in five different sports over three years. They expressed, “There is nothing that compares to being on a high school sports team.” Although the idea of trying out for a team can be daunting, the rewards, both physically and socially, are undeniable. Regular participation in sports boosts physical health by releasing endorphins that contribute to a positive outlook on life, as highlighted by experts in wellness.
The opportunity to meet new people is a key advantage of joining a team. For many students, being part of a sports team helps ease the transition into high school life. Senior Nick Nassar, who has excelled in Boys Varsity Track and Field, emphasized the importance of having a “supportive group of people around me who care about me and make me better.” His achievements, including placing 3rd at Sectionals and qualifying for the Illinois State Finals, reflect the strength of the community at Lake Forest High School.
In addition to intense competition, there are also numerous activities available that cater to students looking for a more relaxed sports experience. “We do a nice job of having a wide range of sports at all levels,” explained Athletic Director Tim Burkhalter. He enjoys being present during practices and games, stating, “Watching the kids compete at their level and do something that they enjoy” is his favorite part of his job.
Burkhalter encourages incoming freshmen to explore various extracurricular activities. “Try multiple things your freshman year to find out what you like and don’t like,” he advised. Participating in sports not only promotes physical health but can also enhance academic performance and social interactions.
As high schoolers reflect on their experiences, many students come to agree that their involvement in sports has profoundly shaped their lives. Whether they’re chasing records or making lifelong friends, the vibrant sports culture at Lake Forest High School is a significant part of student life. “Sports are truly a unique and special part of LFHS,” stated a student athlete, emphasizing the lasting impact that these experiences can have during and well beyond high school.
