High School Sports Roundup: Local Teams Shine on the Field

This Friday was an exciting day for high school sports, with several local teams taking to the field and court for some thrilling matchups. Here’s a look at the highlights from the day’s action.

Xavier vs. Stamford

In a soccer match, Xavier secured a solid victory over Stamford with a score of 3-0. The goals for Xavier came from Dylan Rivera-Bonet with an assist from Jordan Harley, Diego Canellas who connected with Evan Stone, and Hayden Modica assisted by Seamus McCormack. Goalkeeper Randy Heidorn had a quiet night with just 1 save, while Stamford’s Marc Zampino made 6 saves in the loss.

Newington vs. Platt Tech

Meanwhile, Newington dominated Platt Tech with a commanding 4-0 score. Anthony Napoletano netted two goals, while Bernardo Garcia and CJ Rosado also found the back of the net. CJ Rosado and Jason Somera recorded assists. Goalkeeper Gavin Williams contributed to the shutout with 3 saves.

Stonington vs. Seymour

The game between Stonington and Seymour proved to be a nail-biter, wrapping up with Stonington winning 4-3. Salvatore Alessio led Stonington with three goals, while Seymour’s Nate Ferreira scored twice from the penalty spot. Goalkeeper Nick Canella had 5 saves for Stonington while Seymour’s Alex Porczynski managed to collect 8 saves.

Coginchaug vs. Haddam-Killingworth

In another close match, Coginchaug edged past Haddam-Killingworth on their own turf with a score of 3-2. Leading the charge for Coginchaug was Matt Yale who scored twice. The game saw a mix of assists from both teams, with saves of 4 from Coginchaug’s Tommy Wickwire and 6 by HK’s Ethan Pitts.

Volleyball Highlights

On the volleyball court, Trumbull swept Hamden in three sets, winning 25-14, 25-14, 25-16. The Eagles were led by Paulina Bykowski with 9 kills and several assists. NFA battled Westhill to a hard-fought victory in four sets.

These games showcased a lot of talent and determination among the student-athletes. It’s clear that high school sports in the area are thriving, and there’s plenty more action to look forward to in the coming weeks.
