As the high school sports season progresses, the atmosphere is buzzing in our local schools, especially for football fans excited for the PIAA playoffs. This Friday and Saturday, several teams will go head-to-head in the semifinals across different classes.
Starting with Class 6A, Downingtown West (13-1) will take on St. Joseph’s Prep (9-2) on Friday at 7 p.m. at Coatesville. The stakes are high as both teams aim for a spot in the championship. Meanwhile, on Saturday, Central Catholic (11-2) faces Harrisburg (11-2) at Mansion Park in Altoona at 1 p.m., making for a thrilling weekend for high school football.
In Class 5A, there are also some exciting matchups scheduled for Friday. West Chester Rustin (13-1) will play against Roman Catholic (10-4) at West Chester Henderson at 7 p.m. At the same time, Bishop McDevitt (12-2) competes against Pine-Richland (11-1) at Mansion Park, giving fans a reason to root for their favorite teams.
Additionally, Class 4A matches kick off on Friday with Monsignor Bonner-Archbishop Prendergast (10-2) facing Southern Lehigh (12-2) at Central Bucks West, also at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, Lampeter-Strasburg (13-0) will go up against Thomas Jefferson (13-0) at Mansion Park at 1 p.m. Both games promise intense competition.
Friday night is packed with further action as Class 3A features undefeated teams Northwestern Lehigh (13-0) and Danville (13-0) squaring off at Berwick at 7 p.m., while Penn Cambria (14-0) battles Avonworth (10-3) at Norwin at the same time. These games will determine who advances to the finals.
Fans should also look out for Class 2A and Class A matches happening on Friday. In Class 2A, Taylor Riverside (13-1) will compete against Troy (14-0) at Towanda, and South Park (12-1) faces Central Clarion (12-0) at Farrell, both kicking off at 7 p.m. In Class A, Muncy (12-2) goes head-to-head with Bishop Guilfoyle (13-1) at a venue to be determined. The night ends with Port Allegany (13-0) taking on Fort Cherry (14-0) at Penn West-Clarion at 7 p.m.
As for hockey, the action also heats up on Monday, with a variety of games lined up. South Fayette meets Pine-Richland at Baierl Ice Complex at 7 p.m., and other notable fixtures include Bethel Park vs. Thomas Jefferson and Mt. Lebanon vs. Central Catholic at separate venues.
