Celebrating New Beginnings at South Lake Elementary in Lexington, SC

LEXINGTON, SC — A new chapter in education has begun as Lexington County School District One proudly opened the doors to South Lake Elementary, the newest addition to its academic family. This remarkable facility, located on Bluefield Road, marks the culmination of a community-supported bond referendum that took place in 2018. With over 128,000 square feet of space and a price tag of $45 million, this state-of-the-art school is designed to serve and inspire the young minds of Lexington County.

Welcoming Students and Staff

Since officially opening on August 7th, South Lake Elementary has become home to more than 400 students and 80 staff members. The excitement on the first day was palpable as kids entered their new classrooms, eager to embark on their educational journeys. The school embodies the spirit of Lexington, a city gaining recognition as one of the fastest growing in South Carolina, which is itself one of the fastest growing states in the nation.

Messages of Hope and Growth

At the dedication ceremony held recently, Chair of the Lexington County School Board, Anne Marie Green, shared her enthusiasm for the school’s potential. She reflected on the transformational role that schools play in communities, saying, “The future is here in this building. And so that’s just really emotional to think about that we’re setting the path and a course for these students to go on to things that we can’t even imagine.”

She also emphasized the importance of providing students with a solid foundation in crucial subjects like reading, writing, math, and the arts, stating, “Life and technology and communities evolve so quickly,” underscoring that South Lake Elementary is prepared to adapt alongside its students.

Inspiring Leadership

Among the speakers at the ceremony was South Carolina’s Superintendent of Education, Ellen Weaver, and district Superintendent, Dr. Gerrita Postlewait. Each shared their vision for the future of education within the state and the critical role that new facilities like South Lake play in shaping tomorrow’s leaders.

A Heartfelt Mascot Reveal

A particularly heartfelt moment was when the school unveiled its mascot, a Blue Heeler named “Stanley,” after Principal Jennifer Stanley. This naming was a delightful surprise for Principal Stanley, who admitted, “It actually brought tears to my eyes… I’m very humble by nature, and for the students and staff to name the mascot after me, it caught me off guard but it was very touching.”

A Community Hub

Having dedicated nearly three decades to education, Principal Stanley sees the school as more than just a place for academics. “Our school is surrounded by kids that are only going to do great things. And to me, that makes me so proud to be a public educator,” she said, emphasizing the essential role that schools play in building strong communities and shaping the future.

Blue Heelers: A Mission of Values

The Blue Heelers, as the students and staff are proud to be called, are committed to representing the community through values like loyalty, hard work, independence, and courage. Principal Stanley expressed her gratitude for the support that made the school’s opening a reality. “It’s been an honor to have this dedication come to fruition… today was an honor to have everyone here to support us and support our families and our kids. It was just a really wonderful day,” she stated, with a warm smile.

As South Lake Elementary takes its place within the fabric of this growing city, it stands ready to nurture the dreams and aspirations of countless children, shaping the leaders of tomorrow in a wonderful environment filled with opportunity and hope.
