The 23rd ranked South Carolina softball team (28-13) suffered a tough loss in the final game of the Palmetto Series Presented by the South Carolina Education Lottery on Tuesday night. The 19th ranked Tigers (28-11) defeated the Gamecocks 7-0, avenging their earlier loss in the series.
Carolina took game one of the series back on March 20 at Clemson, but couldn’t repeat their success in the rematch. South Carolina women’s basketball national champions Raven Johnson and Kamilla Cardoso threw out the ceremonial first pitches before the game.
Denver Bryant led the Gamecocks at the plate, going 2-for-3 on the night. Pitcher Sage Mardjetko (6-6) started for Carolina, allowing two runs on three hits in 1 1-3 innings. Jori Heard and Alana Vawter also saw time on the mound for the Gamecocks.
The Gamecocks had opportunities to score, putting runners on base in each of the first five innings. However, they were unable to come up with a timely hit to bring them home. The Tigers took control early, scoring two runs in the second inning and adding to their lead throughout the game.
South Carolina will look to bounce back as they host No. 17 Arkansas for a three-game series starting on April 12. Friday and Saturday’s games will be broadcast on the SEC Network, giving fans a chance to cheer on the Gamecocks from home.
