Gamecocks Secure 12 Wins on Final Day in Myrtle Beach
South Carolina Track & Field Shines at Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational
South Carolina Track & Field had an impressive final day at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational, securing victories in 12 events. The Gamecocks finished as the runner-up in both the men’s and women’s standings following the conclusion of Saturday’s events.
Men’s Dominance
The men’s team showcased their strength by winning six out of the seven events they competed in on Saturday. Andrew Bond kicked off the successes by winning the 100m dash with a wind-aided personal best time of 10.42 (2.8). Nyck Harbor delivered an outstanding performance in the 200m, posting the fastest time in the East Region and the second fastest in the NCAA.
Other notable victories for the men’s team came from David Warmington in the 110-meter hurdles, Nate Figgers in the high jump, and Dillon McCarthy in the pole vault. The team secured their runner-up position by triumphing in the 4x400m relay.
Women’s Triumph
The women’s team also excelled on the final day, clinching wins in six events. Zaya Akins set a new meet and facility record in the 200m sprint, while Aalliyah Francis dominated the 400m. Lena Richardson, Hannah Togami, and Ella Lucas contributed to the team’s success by winning their respective events in the pole vault and discus throw.
The women’s 4x400m relay team, comprised of Aalliyah Francis, Judy Kosgei, Cynteria James, and Sylvia Chelangat, sealed South Carolina’s strong finish by earning valuable points for the team.
Upcoming Action
Next up, South Carolina will host the 2024 Weems Baskin Invitational at the Sheila & Morris Cregger Track on March 22-23. The Gamecocks will aim to build on their success in Myrtle Beach as they compete in their upcoming home meet.
