GREENVILLE, S.C. – No. 1/1 South Carolina secured their eighth SEC Tournament championship in the last 10 seasons, clinching a 79-72 victory over No. 8/5 LSU on Sunday afternoon at Bon Secours Wellness Arena. The Gamecocks’ latest triumph marked their second consecutive title win, with standout performance from freshman MiLaysia Fulwiley, who tallied a career-high 24 points and earned the tournament MVP honors.
Fulwiley played a pivotal role in the Gamecocks’ success, contributing two crucial 3-pointers during a 24-11 run in the first and second quarters that ultimately propelled South Carolina to establish a lead they would maintain for the remainder of the game. Despite a closely contested matchup, the Gamecocks steadily extended their advantage throughout each quarter.
Although the Tigers closed the gap to just one point following free throws by Flau’jae Johnson with 4:36 remaining, South Carolina responded emphatically with key baskets from Raven Johnson and Bree Hall to widen the margin. Following a tense moment that saw tempers flare on both sides, the Gamecocks maintained their composure and secured the victory with solid performances on both the boards and from the free-throw line.
Reflecting on the season-long journey, the Gamecocks’ triumph in the SEC Tournament cements their status as a powerhouse in women’s college basketball, with aspirations of further success as they prepare for the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
