Former University of South Carolina Players Making an Impact in Major League Baseball

The Major League Baseball’s 2024 season is heating up as the All-Star Break approaches. Let’s take a look at how some former Gamecocks are performing in the “Show.”

Jonah Bride (Miami Marlins)

Jonah Bride was called up to the Marlins on July 4 and has been making waves with the team, playing in 10 games this season. Bride showcased his skill with a sacrifice fly against Boston and a hit against Houston. One of his standout performances was on May 5 when he notched a two-run double.

Whit Merrifield (Philadelphia Phillies)

Whit Merrifield has been a key player for the Phillies, contributing to the team’s top-ranking position in baseball. With 21 runs, four doubles, a triple, three home runs, and 11 RBI, Merrifield has also swiped 11 bases. His recent highlights include a 2-for-4 performance against Atlanta and an RBI triple versus the Dodgers.

Carmen Mlodzinski (Pittsburgh Pirates)

For the Pirates, Carmen Mlodzinski has made 19 appearances and three starts this season. With a 3.42 ERA, Mlodzinski secured a win and 23 strikeouts in 26.1 innings pitched. Notably, he nabbed a win against the Rockies on June 16 and exhibited his prowess by striking out two against the Cardinals on July 3.

Jordan Montgomery (Arizona Diamondbacks)

Despite being on the injured list, Jordan Montgomery has clinched six wins in 13 starts for the Diamondbacks, tallying 45 strikeouts in 65.2 innings. Montgomery’s stellar performance includes a win against the Phillies on June 21 with five strikeouts and two earned runs over six innings.

Clarke Schmidt (New York Yankees)

Also on the injured list, Clarke Schmidt boasted a 5-3 record and a 2.52 ERA with the Yankees. In 11 starts, Schmidt notched 67 strikeouts in 60.2 innings pitched. His standout win against the Twins on May 16 featured eight strikeouts over eight innings with only three hits allowed.

Christian Walker (Arizona Diamondbacks)

Christian Walker may not have made the All-Star Game roster, but he’s been delivering All-Star caliber performance for the Diamondbacks. In 93 games, Walker boasts a .263 batting average with 58 runs, 19 doubles, 22 home runs, and 66 RBI. During a series against the Dodgers, Walker hit five home runs and drove in nine runs, showcasing his offensive prowess.

These former Gamecocks continue to leave their mark in the Major League Baseball, showcasing the talent and skill developed at the University of South Carolina.
