The University of South Carolina’s softball team defeated Mississippi State 8-4 in their SEC Tournament opener on Wednesday night. Despite a late start, the 11th seeded Gamecocks managed to secure a victory against the sixth seeded Bulldogs.
Denver Bryant stood out, going 4-for-4 at the plate and contributing two RBIs. Zoe Laneaux and Aniyah Black also performed well, each finishing 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Pitcher Alana Vawter played a key role, tallying three strikeouts in the final five innings.
The Gamecocks took an early lead by scoring two runs in the first inning and added two more in the second. A four-run rally in the fifth inning solidified their control of the game.
South Carolina’s eight runs set a new record for a double-digit seed in SEC Tournament history. Additionally, a crucial double play in the fourth inning tied a program record for the season.
With this impressive victory, the Gamecocks will now face No. 4 seed Texas A&M in the next round of the tournament. The team aims to continue their winning streak and make a strong push in the SEC Tournament.
