One local man, Michael Moore, has called Forest Acres home for over a decade. In a heartfelt recount of the hurricane’s chaos, he described the moment the storm turned his life upside down. “After a minute I realized that I am pinned under, and I’ve got to get out,” said Moore. He vividly recalled having to push debris off himself just to find a way to escape his home. “It’s in real bad shape. No roof, no exterior wall. I think the upstairs is devastated,” he confessed, his voice heavy with emotion as he reflected on the terrifying experience a tree crashing into his house just weeks ago.

Michael has been waiting for a tree removal service to address the 100-year-old Oak lodged in his home. “After the removal, my walls were left falling to the ground,” he explained. The despair was palpable as he spoke about holding on to hope despite the situation. “I’m hoping it’s not a total loss; we love the house, we love the area. But if we can’t, we can’t. We’ll start over hopefully in this same lot, or if not, we’ll find another place in the same area,” shared Moore, displaying a remarkable sense of resilience in trying times.

Just last Tuesday, the Forest Acres City Council reported that the South Carolina Department of Transportation (DOT) is currently working hard to clear the roads blocked by the storm. “North of 200 trees fell here in Forest Acres; we know more than 30 of them blocked roadways and had to be cut up Friday, in the height of the storm,” explained the City’s Director of Communication, Lynnsey Baker. She emphasized that recovery is a gradual process, “It’s just going to take so much time to get to all the different streets and collect this debris.”
FEMA Assistance: A Challenge to Access
In the wake of Hurricane Helene, two additional counties in South Carolina have been approved for FEMA relief, including Richland County. However, not everyone is experiencing an easy path to assistance. Michael Moore applied for FEMA assistance but found himself facing disappointment. “I was denied. It says status I clicked on there and it says denied. I plan on if I can get the phone number from the tree company, I will call FEMA directly,” he said, frustration evident in his tone. “How can they deny it? I don’t know what they would offer, but how can they say no?”
To be eligible for aid, local officials note that residents impacted by the hurricane need to contact the city and have an assessment done on their property. This process can feel overwhelming for many still reeling from the storm.
