Columbia is gearing up to say goodbye to a beloved little bakery, The Strudel Shop, which is closing its doors after three years of sweet treats and warm smiles. Located at 1237 Washington Street, this charming bakery has been a firm favorite for locals and visitors alike since it made its way to Columbia.
On January 19, 2025, the owner, Kevin Kelly, announced the big news with a heartfelt message on social media, stating simply that “it was just time to go.” After more than three years of whipping up delectable strudels and unique pastries, Kelly has decided it’s time to chase new opportunities.
It seems like there’s a mix of sadness and appreciation in the air as the community reflects on their experiences at The Strudel Shop. In his follow-up message on January 21, Kelly expressed his gratitude to the loyal Columbia customers who supported the bakery during its journey. He hinted at exciting new projects on the horizon, although he didn’t spill the beans just yet about what these endeavors might entail.
The Strudel Shop first opened way back in October 2019 in Charlotte, North Carolina. After a few successful years down south, it made its way to Columbia in January 2022, continuing to win hearts with its array of rich flavors and mouth-watering pastries. With a family background in the culinary industry, you can bet that Kelly has baking in his blood. Several of his relatives are involved in cooking and baking, which surely added a touch of tradition and love to every pastry they crafted at the shop.
So, while The Strudel Shop may be parking itself for now, the wheels of creativity are still turning for Kevin. The Columbia community will be eagerly watching and waiting for the next chapter in this blossoming story.
