WAUKESHA − In a thrilling display of speed and skill, Ana Flanagan, a standout swimmer from Appleton North, made history on Saturday by winning the state championship in the 100-yard breaststroke at Waukesha South High School. Flanagan clocked in at an impressive 1:03.20, narrowly beating out Annika Curran from Verona Area, who finished just behind her at 1:03.34.
Flanagan’s victory adds her name to the list of state champions from Appleton North, joining the ranks of Cortnee Adams and Stephanie Gould. During her impressive career, Adams accrued a remarkable seven individual state titles, while Gould took home the diving championship in 1997.
Along with her individual triumph, Flanagan also contributed to her team’s efforts in the 200 freestyle relay, where Appleton North finished third with a time of 1:36.22. The relay squad included her teammates Afton Scoresby, Elise Brazzale, and Maddie Loken. The first-place relay was captured by Middleton, finishing at 1:33.90.
In other events, Carly Larson from De Pere/West De Pere secured third in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.42 seconds, while Julia Saxman from Germantown took the top spot, finishing in :53.34. Loken also put forth a strong performance, finishing fifth in the breaststroke with a time of 1:04.36.
The overall team rankings saw Middleton crowned champions with 334 points, followed by Verona Area at 211 and Arrowhead with 200.5. Appleton North finished the championship in seventh place, accumulating a total of 107 points.
This event showcased a day full of competitive swimming, with many remarkable athletes contributing to exciting races across the board. Flanagan’s win not only highlights her personal achievements but also brings pride to the Appleton North swim program.
