COLUMBIA, S.C. — Exciting Developments as Roads Get a Makeover!
As the new Scout Motors plant in Blythewood starts to take shape, the surrounding roads are also getting some much-needed attention. Currently, there’s a significant project going on to widen Blythewood Road from I-77 to Syrup Road. This ambitious plan even includes a shiny new roundabout at Community Road, aimed at easing traffic congestion in what has become a critical intersection.
County Council Makes Progress
Recently, things took a positive turn when the Richland County Council made an important decision. During a meeting on Tuesday evening, Councilman Paul Livingston presented a vendor contract for the next phase of the Blythewood Road project. With a unanimous vote, the council approved the contract with Cherokee Incorporated. “What we voted on tonight was to award a contract to Cherokee Incorporated for widening Blythewood from Syrup to Muller Road. Now this is actually a part of the Scout Motors project,” Livingston expressed with enthusiasm.
Local Residents Share Their Thoughts
With all the buzz around the project, resident reactions seem to be a mixed bag. For instance, Jeffrey Allums felt that while the improvements are great, they might not go far enough. “I think Blythewood Road needs to be widened all the way to Highway 321,” he stated, pointing out a need for more comprehensive planning.
Conversely, Bobbi Young expressed her frustration with the overall approach of development in Richland County. “The unfortunate thing is that Richland County absolutely does not know how to plan for development, instead they develop then plan,” she remarked, highlighting a disconnect between development needs and execution.
Roundabouts: A Welcome Change?
Then, of course, there’s the topic of the roundabouts. Jason Wilson, who spent some time living overseas, shared his positive experience with roundabouts from his time in England. “I lived in England and saw the amazing efficiency of roundabouts,” he said, supporting their installation in Blythewood. This sentiment was echoed by Martha Ann Trapp, who felt that local drivers would quickly adapt, just like she has in other places where roundabouts are more common. “We can handle it!” she declared confidently.
A Transformational Project
As these developments unfold, the backdrop of the Scout Motors project remains a hot topic. Councilman Livingston expressed his optimism, saying, “I believe this will be transformational for the area.” He believes this project marks a significant milestone for the county, especially when it comes to creating jobs and increasing funding resources through tax revenues. “In all my time on county council, I can’t think of any particular thing we’ve done that is as transformative as this particular project,” he added proudly.

Unfortunately, county officials haven’t been able to provide a clear timeline just yet. But as developments continue to evolve, local residents are hopeful for significant improvements to their roads.
