Excitement in Columbia as Early Voting Breaks Records!

Columbia, S.C.—What a thrilling time it is for voters in South Carolina! The first-ever no-exception early voting period has just wrapped up and let me tell you, it has been a game changer! With more than 1.5 million ballots cast in the 2024 General Election during this early voting phase, South Carolina has set a record—these numbers are the highest of any pre-election day voting the state has ever seen!

How Did We Get Here?

Just to give you a bit of context, back in 2020, our state legislature made a big move by allowing everyone to vote absentee and in person without needing a specific excuse. You see, before that, voters had to select an allowed exemption if they wanted to vote early. However, when the pandemic hit, those restrictions were temporarily suspended, allowing many to have their voices heard without hurdles.

Fast forward to May 2022, South Carolina legislators passed a bill that paved the way for a two-week early voting period. This move has placed South Carolina in line with a majority of states across the country. In fact, only Mississippi, Alabama, and New Hampshire are lagging behind when it comes to offering early voting options. South Carolinians have finally joined the trend!

Thrilled Officials

Howie Knapp, the Executive Director of the South Carolina State Election Commission (SEC), couldn’t hide his excitement. He expressed, “We are thrilled to see this record-breaking turnout during the early voting period as we head into a highly anticipated Election Day. If you haven’t cast your ballot yet, get to the polls tomorrow and exercise your right to vote.”

Mark Your Calendars!

The anticipation builds as we look toward Election Day! Make sure to mark your calendars for November 5! Polling places will be open bright and early from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. So, if you haven’t made your voting plans yet, now is the time to get organized.

Before heading out, it is crucial to check your sample ballot and locate your designated polling place at scVOTES.gov. This way, you’ll be all set and ready to make your voice heard. And don’t forget, you’ll need to show a Photo ID when you check in to vote, so be sure to have that handy!

Absentee Ballots Need Attention!

If you’ve opted for an absentee ballot but haven’t submitted it yet, please return it as soon as possible—no later than 7:00 p.m. on Election Day. In fact, officials recommend that you consider returning your ballot in person to guarantee it’s received by the deadline.

Just a friendly reminder, a Photo ID is also required when returning your absentee ballot in person. If you’re in the military or overseas, there are specific guidelines you need to follow, and you can find all that information at scVOTES.gov. Also, if you need help returning your ballot, an Immediate Family Member or an Authorized Representative can assist you.

Engage with the Process!

As we gear up for this crucial moment, it’s great to see people getting informed and involved. South Carolina is buzzing with enthusiasm, and you can feel the excitement in the air! Be sure to stay connected with your voting journey and get all the info you need.

For tips and updates regarding this election cycle, don’t hesitate to explore around. It’s important to stay engaged and empowered as we take this step forward together.
