Columbia Shines Bright at the First Debutante Ball of the Season

Thanksgiving Eve Festivities Bring Together Family and Friends

Columbia, SC – The holiday season kicked off with a splash of elegance and charm at the first debutante ball of the year, The Columbia Ball, held at the University of South Carolina’s beautiful Pastides Alumni Center. Families gathered for this cherished tradition on Thanksgiving Eve, November 27, 2024, showcasing the heart and spirit of our community. The evening was filled with joy, laughter, and a dazzling display of grace as the city’s debutante daughters made their grand entrance into society.

The evening’s festivities commenced at 7:00 p.m. as guests arrived to a warm reception, greeted by Mr. Earle Craig Waites, Jr., the president of The Columbia Ball, and his wife, Mrs. Waites. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as mothers, grandmothers, and their debutante daughters prepared for a magical evening. Following the reception, the much-anticipated presentation of the debutantes took center stage, marking a memorable milestone in their lives.

Debutantes Steal the Show

The air was electric as Mr. Waites introduced each debutante with pride. The honored daughters, looking stunning in their formal white gowns, were escorted by their proud fathers. Among them were the lovely Miss Caroline Everett Little, who dazzled everyone as she was escorted by Mr. Joseph High Pope, Jr., and Miss Helen Ellsworth Clarke, who made quite an impression with Mr. Samuel Sumpter Clarke at her side.

Other notable debutantes included Miss Elizabeth Buchanan Kelchner, escorted by Mr. Julius Walker McKay III, and Miss Sarah Helen Irene McNair, who looked radiant as she entered with Mr. Theron Max Childress. The evening was also a chance to honor granddaughters and guest debutantes alike, each escorted with grace by their respective gentlemen.

A Night to Remember

The highlight of the evening couldn’t go unnoticed, as each debutante was presented with a hand-tied bouquet of roses in shades of white, blush, and pink, along with other exquisite blooms wrapped in soft pink velvet ribbons. What a lovely touch that delighted the attendees! The bouquets were further personalized to reflect the family legacy, incorporating ribbons and lace for each generation. It truly was a special way to represent the strong bonds of family traditions.

As the evening progressed, dinner was served, followed by dancing in the ballroom, where the talented Ross Holmes Band kept the celebration alive with lively music. Everyone reveled in the company of friends and family, rejoicing in the beauty and elegance of the night.

A Successful Team Behind the Ball

Behind the scenes, a dedicated team worked tirelessly to make the event a success. Seated at the President’s table with Mr. and Mrs. Waites were Mr. James Edwin Miller II, Mrs. Tyler Banks Hudson, and numerous other committee chairmen who ensured everything went smoothly. From decorations to music, their efforts were truly commendable.

Special Traditions

As part of the program, special attention was also given to the sons and grandsons who were invited to attend their first Ball. Mr. Guy Collier Buffum and Mr. Maybank McLain Pope were welcomed into this time-honored tradition, further uniting families and fostering new connections.

Looking Ahead

The Columbia Ball not only marked the official beginning of the season’s debutante events but also set the tone for the celebrations to come. With laughter, love, and connection at its heart, this annual tradition remains a cherished highlight for many families in the community. As we roll into the holiday season, the memories made on this enchanting night will no doubt linger long into the new year.
