Cooper High School Football Team Falls Short in State Final

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Cooper High School football team wrapped up its season as the Class 5A state runner-up on Saturday night at Kroger Field, falling to Bowling Green with a final score of 37-20. This defeat marks the second consecutive year that Bowling Green has triumphed over Cooper in the state final.

Ending the season with an impressive 13-1 record, Cooper showcased its talent throughout the season, outscoring opponents 644 to 215 before the championship game. The Jaguars secured a number of key victories, including wins against Ryle, Highlands (twice), and Great Crossing, leading them on an exciting journey to their second straight state final.

In the championship match, junior quarterback Cam O’Hara had a solid performance, completing 18 of 27 passes for 262 yards and throwing for three touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Jaiden Combs contributed significantly with seven receptions for 72 yards and a touchdown, while fellow senior wide receiver Isaiah Johnson added five receptions for 89 yards and another touchdown. Junior wide receiver/safety Ryker Campbell caught three passes for 72 yards, returned three kicks for 57 yards, and made an interception on defense.

Defensively, senior tight end Austin Alexander stood out with three receptions for 29 yards and a sack, while junior linebacker Max Wethington led the charge with 13 tackles. Both junior linebacker Dax Bolen and senior defensive end Mike Mullvihill contributed with 10 tackles each.

As a point of note, Cooper wasn’t the only team competing for a title in Lexington last weekend. Earlier in the day, Ryle (11-3) finished as the Class 6A state runner-up. Additionally, Beechwood earned a big win against Owensboro Catholic, claiming the Class 2A state championship with a score of 50-34, marking the school’s 18th state championship and their 23rd championship game appearance.

With a remarkable season behind them, Cooper’s football team will look to build on this experience as they prepare for the next. For now, the players can take pride in their achievements and the memorable games that brought them to the state finals.
