Columbia Faces Major Traffic Changes as Construction Takes Off!
Columbia drivers, hold on to your steering wheels! The much-anticipated Carolina Crossroads Project is in full swing, and it’s about to shake up traffic patterns around the city, particularly at the notorious intersection known as Malfunction Junction. The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has some important updates that every commuter needs to hear!
Timely Updates on Closures
Starting this Tuesday evening at 9 p.m., brace yourselves for the temporary closure of the off-ramp to Colonial Life Boulevard from I-126 westbound. But don’t worry, you won’t be stuck for long! The ramp is set to reopen by Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. However, get ready for another brief closure from Tuesday night into early Thursday. That’s right, we’ll see the ramp close again overnight on Thursday, following the same hours, between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. for more essential roadwork.
For those trying to navigate around town during these closures, a handy detour will be in place. Drivers coming from I-126 westbound will be redirected at Greystone Boulevard to take a route through Broad River Road before they can hop back onto Colonial Life Boulevard. It’s a little extra driving, but it’s designed to keep traffic moving along safely while the work continues.
Heads Up for I-26 Drivers!
But that’s not all! Meanwhile, another lane on I-26 will also be temporarily closed at the bridge over the Saluda River (Exit 108) starting that same Tuesday at 10 p.m. This lane closure comes as SCDOT crews work diligently to install new overhead signage. The latest updates indicate that this lane is expected to reopen by 4 a.m. Wednesday.
During this closure, traffic will need to divert via I-26 westbound to I-20 westbound, and then back to I-26 eastbound to get to I-126. SCDOT has assured that message boards and signs will be out and about, informing all drivers of the ongoing detours and changes.
Why All the Fuss? The Carolina Crossroads Project
Now, you may be wondering, why are these traffic changes happening? The answer lies in the impressive $2.1 billion Carolina Crossroads Project. It’s all about improving safety and reducing congestion at the critical interchange where I-26, I-126, and I-20 meet—an area that currently accommodates over 134,000 vehicles daily!
This massive overhaul includes replacing the outdated cloverleaf interchanges with modern turbine interchange designs, plus widening key sections of the highways—making it more efficient for everyone on the road.
Crew work is already underway with the construction phases, focusing initially on I-126 at Colonial Life Boulevard and making improvements to I-20 and Bush River Road. These enhancements will bring about additional lanes, upgraded bridges, and innovative interchange designs to cater to the expected population growth in the Midlands region.
The project isn’t stopping at just one phase either! Phase 2 began in late 2022 and involves constructing new bridges and making adjustments around I-20 and Broad River Road. The entire project aims for completion by 2029, so regular updates will be given on traffic adjustments via the SCDOT’s project webpage.
Environmental Commitment and Community Engagement
For those concerned about the environment, the project developers are taking special care to preserve wetlands and sensitive areas during construction. Plus, SCDOT held a public engagement session highlighting the project’s impact and future plans, making sure community voices are heard throughout this exciting evolution.
With funding drawn from increased gas taxes across the state and around $2 billion already allocated, there’s a concerted effort to ensure safety and connectivity will greatly improve for all travel on these vital roadways.
So, dear Columbia residents, buckle up and stay informed! The traffic around town may be a bit of a puzzle for a while, but in the end, we’ll all benefit from a smoother ride on the roads we rely on every day.
