Exciting Times in Columbia: Achievements and Celebrations

Columbia is buzzing with excitement as the local schools celebrate remarkable achievements and milestones! Education plays an essential role in our community, and it’s always heartwarming to see students and staff recognized for their hard work. This week, let’s dive into some of the fantastic highlights coming from our schools.

National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists Shine Bright

First up, we have some incredible news about the National Merit Scholarship Program. Semifinalists from several local high schools have been recognized for their academic excellence. At Dreher High School, four bright students—Spencer S. Bush, Robert L. Leonardi, Jiale Liu, and Beckham J. O’Neill—are making their mark. Meanwhile, A.C. Flora High School has two semifinalists, William M. Beasley and Brooks J. Ransom.

Other notable semifinalists include Aspen M. Brooks, Nicholas D. Glenn, Wyatt A. Joye, Zamam B. Lone, Theodore E. Lumpkin, and Michael B. Rice from Hammond School, and from Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, we have Camrynn Beck, Joseph Hauk, and Mary Ruskell. It’s wonderful to see our students thriving academically!

A Perfect Score for Many!

But that’s not all! In addition to the semifinalists, fifty-seven students from the Lexington-Richland School District Five have achieved a perfect score on one of the SC READY tests! These shining stars include names like Jacob Abdulrahman, Majd Anay, Parker Ashton, and Alice Biddle. It’s impressive to see such dedication and intellectual prowess among our youth!

Teacher of the Year Honoree

Let’s not forget the educators who inspire these students! Rona Stuart, a dedicated social studies teacher at Spring Valley High School, has been named the 2024-2025 District Teacher of the Year for Richland School District Two. What a well-deserved honor! We know Ms. Stuart has made a significant impact on so many students, and her contributions to the community are truly commendable.

America’s Healthiest Schools

In the spirit of promoting well-being, it’s exciting to announce that Beechwood Middle School and Midway Elementary School have both ranked among America’s Healthiest Schools for the upcoming 2024–25 school year. This recognition not only highlights their commitment to healthy meals and fitness but also showcases the involvement of students and families in health programs.

C.A. Johnson High School Celebrates 75 Years!

Mark your calendars! This year, C.A. Johnson High School is celebrating its 75th anniversary! Since opening its doors in 1949, this institution has shaped countless young lives. Alumni are warmly invited to reconnect during homecoming events taking place on September 20 and 21. Here’s what’s on the agenda:

  • Friday, September 20: A 75th anniversary homecoming mixer from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the school’s atrium, featuring keynote speakers Charles F. Bolden Jr. and Dr. Thaddeus Bell. They’re both distinguished alumni and will surely inspire!
  • Saturday, September 21: The festivities will kick off with a parade at 10 a.m., followed by a football game at Bolden Stadium against Allendale-Fairfax High School at noon. Tailgating starts early at 9 a.m.!

This is going to be a fantastic opportunity to celebrate together, reminisce, and cheer for the Hornets!

Columbia, let’s keep supporting our students, teachers, and the rich history of our schools. Watching our community celebrate achievements makes us proud and hopeful for the bright future ahead!
