Columbia, SC Takes a Bold Step Towards Mental Health Awareness
Hey there, Columbia! We have some exciting news to share that’s all about taking care of our minds and supporting those around us. The BROOKLAND-LAKEVIEW EMPOWERMENT CENTER (BLEC) has recently appointed Reverend Dr. Jeffrey A. Howard as the new project coordinator for its Mental Health Awareness Initiative. This initiative is at the heart of a growing movement to improve mental health services and education in our communities, and Dr. Howard is just the right person for the job!
A Passion and a Mission
Dr. Cindye Richburg Cotton, the Executive Director of BLEC, couldn’t be more thrilled about having Dr. Howard on board. “We are pleased to have a professional with a stellar record of success to join the leadership team that is addressing mental health issues in our communities,” she said. With Dr. Howard’s extensive background and passion for mental health, he is uniquely qualified to lead this significant effort.
What Will Dr. Howard Do?
As the project coordinator, Dr. Howard will kick off the mental health first aid training program. His role will involve coordinating training sessions with various community partners. When asked about his excitement for this position, he shared, “I am extremely excited about this opportunity to serve our targeted communities.” Dr. Howard emphasized the necessity of this training during a time when misinformation needs to be tackled and the stigma associated with mental health disorders needs to be reduced.
A Look at Dr. Howard’s Journey
Before joining BLEC, Dr. Howard wore many hats. He most recently worked as a consultant for the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, where he established the inaugural South Carolina Racial Justice Leadership Cohort. Alongside this role, he also advised the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN), creating and implementing vital programs aimed at educating communities about COVID-19, HIV, and diabetes, focusing on vaccine hesitancy and improving vaccination rates.
From 2022 to 2023, he served at Welfare Baptist Church in Belton, S.C., where he led the Health and Wellness Ministry, implementing key programs to tackle issues like diabetes management and weight loss. He has a rich history of partnerships and community outreach which will undoubtedly add to his work at BLEC.
Impressive Education and Recognition
His academic credentials are equally impressive. Dr. Howard holds a bachelor’s degree in Family and Church Education and a Master of Divinity. He also obtained a Master of Sacred Theology, and most recently earned his Doctor of Ministry from the Interdenominational Theology Center and Morehouse School of Religion in Atlanta, GA. He has received multiple awards, including the 2024 Brenda Kneece Social Justice Award and the South Carolina Mayor’s Community Partnership Award, recognizing his dedication and contributions to society.
