Columbia, the charming city nestled in South Carolina, is buzzing with excitement as the talented local band Writ3rs Block brings a wave of creativity and community spirit to the picturesque Riverfront Park!
On a day marked by rain showers and overcast skies, the weather seemed uncertain, with a high of 69°F and a chance of rain reaching 50%. But, fear not, rain lovers—this dedicated trio is ready to weather any storm, and they’re inviting you to join in the fun with their special event, Recess on the River.
Hosted alongside the scenic Congaree River, this community event offers not just free music but also a unique open mic experience that highlights local artists. The first event took place in May, and it started off with just a handful of attendees. Now, they’re thrilled to see upwards of 100 music enthusiasts enjoying the show!
So, who are the masterminds behind this artistic initiative? We have Blane, the charismatic MC, Richard Thomas, a wickedly talented guitarist, and the enchanting Olivia Zoe, who shines as the vocalist. Together, they have a vision—to create an inclusive and family-friendly environment where creativity can blossom.
During a recent chat with the band, Olivia emphasized the essence of Recess on the River, stating, “We are Writ3rs Block, and this is a community event that we started this summer to showcase local artists.” But make no mistake, this isn’t just about putting on a show—it’s about building a community and nourishing creativity.
Blane added, “It’s all about just building a community, nourishing the soil and seeing what comes from it.” He reflected on the power of togetherness, “Movements start with community, you know? The more we share a space, the more momentum builds.” This couldn’t ring more true for the burgeoning music scene in Columbia.
While they may have started out without big ambitions, both Richard and Olivia shared their dreams of what Recess on the River could grow into. “Ideally, this would become something of a staple music festival in Columbia that always stays free and showcases local artists,” Olivia said with a glint of excitement in her eyes.
This inclusive effort opens the door for local musicians to perform, whilst also encouraging the community to come together. So, how can you contribute to this beautiful initiative? Olivia offered a few suggestions: “Monetary donations are always welcome, but you can also help by bringing a case of water to our events or just your lovely selves!”
As the rain continued to patter lightly, the band’s motivation shone brightly. They encourage everyone to embrace their creative instincts and follow their dreams. As Blane wisely noted, “Your imagination can be your best friend or your enemy. Treat it like a relationship and let it bloom within you.”
In a final rallying call, Richard chimed in with some gentle advice: “Get out of your own way. Do what feels good and don’t put yourself down about it.” Wise words, indeed!
So, as Columbia’s Riverfront Park fills with rhythm and creativity, remember to support your local artists. Follow Writ3rs Block on Instagram @writ3rsblockmusic for updates and to catch their next riverside concerts. Let’s keep the music alive and vibrant in our community!
Embrace the rain, foster your imagination, and let’s build something beautiful together, Columbia!
