Columbia, South Carolina, is buzzing with excitement! New tourism statistics reveal that the Columbia region has seen a delightful influx of visitors, welcoming a whopping 16.4 million visitors in 2023, up from 15.8 million the year before. These impressive numbers were shared during a delightful media breakfast on September 10, 2024, held at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center (CMCC), which is also celebrating its 20th anniversary this month!
As we raise our glasses to the 20-year legacy of the CMCC, Bill Ellen, the President and CEO of Experience Columbia SC (ECSC), expressed immense pride in the sustainable growth of tourism. “Thanks to successful strategies and support from our stakeholders, our region welcomed over 16 million visitors in 2023, and tourism has a $2.8 billion economic impact annually,” he shared with enthusiasm.
That’s a lot of visitors and a lot of dollars! Ellen also emphasized how essential the CMCC has been as an “economic driver,” attracting groups who indulge in local restaurants, enjoy hotels, visit attractions, and spread their glittering visitor dollars across our vibrant community.
What’s particularly exciting is that visitor spending increased too! In 2023, tourists spent about $1.8 billion, which is a fantastic increase of 6.5 percent compared to the previous year. With nearly 600,000 additional visitors, Columbia is certainly stepping onto the tourism stage with style. Out of the total visitors, about 5.7 million decided to stay overnight, making Columbia a favored destination for more than just a quick stop.
The recent tourism statistics were compiled by Longwoods International Tourism Economics, and Ellen pointed out how every department at ECSC plays a key role in this success story. He proudly remarked, “You won’t find a more passionate team anywhere.” From the sales team that engages with potential planners to the operational crew ensuring the CMCC remains pristine, it truly is a cohesive effort!
Speaking of pride, Cheryl Swanson, the Vice President and General Manager of CMCC, highlighted her center’s tremendous achievements. Since opening back in September 2004, the CMCC has welcomed more than 3.9 million visitors and hosted over 8,000 events. “The CMCC’s greatest achievement is we have accomplished exactly what a convention center is supposed to do,” Swanson emphasized, showcasing how the center has efficiently attracted visitors while boosting the local economy.
In honor of their 20th anniversary, the CMCC will host some fantastic events! An invitation-only VIP celebration on September 16 will feature a live painter adding to the venue’s art collection. But that’s not all! On September 18, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., the center will open its doors to the public, complete with refreshments, a walking tour, and fun prizes!
Other exciting details shared included the $13 million economic impact from the recent Rivals in Red Tour at the University of South Carolina’s Williams-Brice Stadium and a staggering 178 events booked, equating to a total of 25,673 hotel room nights.
Plus, there’s been a marked increase in traffic to the Visitors Center by about 38 percent, showcasing just how engaged the public is with the region’s tourism initiatives.
Ellen also touched on how community pride plays a significant role in Columbia’s tourism endeavor. “Thousands of residents have fond memories crafted in this building, and as they recall their experiences, we build a personal connection that helps sustain this growth,” he said.
With all these advancements and growth, it’s clear that Columbia is becoming more than just a destination—it’s a vibrant community with heart and spirit that resonates with every visitor. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, Columbia is ready to welcome you with open arms and plenty of reasons to stay awhile!
