Columbia Prepares for Rainy Weather and Exciting Literary Fest This Weekend

Hello, Columbia! Ready for a Rainy Day and a Literary Celebration?

Good morning, folks! It looks like our weather today is about to take us on a little rollercoaster ride. As you sip your morning coffee, be prepared for some rain! The forecast indicates a 100% chance of rain this morning, with rainfall accumulations tipping near half an inch. So, if you’re planning to head out and about, don’t forget your umbrella!

It’ll start off quite warm—expect a morning high of 67°F—but don’t get too comfortable, as temperatures will plummet to around 45°F by the afternoon. Those winds from the west-southwest will be breezy, blowing in at 15 to 25 mph. So, if you’re brave enough to venture outside later, a warm jacket is definitely going to be your best friend.

After those raindrops clear away, we can look forward to a mostly clear sky this evening and a chilly night with temperatures dropping to about 32°F. Winds will settle down a bit to a gentle breeze of 5 to 10 mph. So, it might be a good night to cozy up with a good book—especially considering the incredible literary event headed our way!

Get Ready for the Read Freely Fest!

Speaking of books, on March 28 through 30, our very own Richland Library Main will host its inaugural Read Freely Fest. How exciting is that?! This festival is all about bringing readers, writers, and book lovers together in a whirlwind of literary joy.

As if the chance to escape the rain and dive into books isn’t enough, the festival is bringing together some dazzling authors for you to meet! Five amazing headliners have been announced:

  • DeLana R. A. Dameron – her upcoming novel, Redwood Court, is set to be a Reese Book Club pick, debuting in February 2024!
  • Patti Callahan Henry – this New York Times bestselling author, known for Becoming Mrs. Lewis, will spark your imagination.
  • Mike Curato – the talented author and illustrator behind Flamer, a 2020 Lambda Literary Award winner for LGBTQ Young Adult.
  • Abbott Kahler – his works like Sin in the Second City and The Ghosts of Eden Park have captured countless hearts.
  • Brendan Slocumb – bestselling author of The Violin Conspiracy and Symphony of Secrets will be in the spotlight.

The festival promises a festive atmosphere with something for everyone—whether you’ve been a bookworm all your life or you’re just dipping your toes into the literary world. Expect thought-provoking talks, book signings, and engaging discussions with both established authors and rising stars in the literary scene.

A Marketplace of Literary Treasures

Don’t worry if you like to support indie authors; the festival will feature an exciting marketplace with over 30 vendors, offering everything from unique books to fun bookish merchandise. Plus, you’ll get to dive into dynamic panels and informative discussions where authors and industry experts share their insights and stories.

And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, there will be live music, performances, and delicious food to keep your spirits high! With a motto of “where stories find good company,” the Read Freely Fest is set to be an inspiring experience.

So mark your calendars for a wonderful weekend of stories, creative exploration, and perhaps a little less rain, as we embrace the joy of books and the art of storytelling. For more details and updates, don’t forget to check out ReadFreelyFest.com.
