Columbia Bids Farewell to a Dedicated Officer

In a heartfelt announcement, the City of Columbia shared the news of the passing of Master Police Officer Christopher “Chris” Santos Carrizales. This beloved officer, who left an indelible mark on the community, will be remembered not just for his service, but for the heartfelt way he touched the lives of those around him.

A Life Devoted to Service

Chris Carrizales was more than just a police officer; he was a loving family man, a dedicated public servant, and a proud veteran. His commitment to policing started at a young age, showing that he not only dreamed of making a difference but actively pursued that dream throughout his life. Born in 1968 in Gary, Indiana, and raised in Chicago, Illinois, his pathways into public service began early on. His journey brought him to the Columbia Police Department, where he began his career on December 6, 2004, and took the Oath of Office on April 18, 2005.

Throughout his time with the department, Carrizales took on various roles, demonstrating his versatility and dedication. He served in North Region Patrol, as a Master Police Officer, in Community Services, the Drug Suppression Team, the Special Operations Bureau, and the Office of Professional Standards. His hard work and dedication shone through, earning him accolades such as the Columbia Police Department Officer of the Year and the Community Achievement Award in 2012.

An Officer with a Heart

Carrizales was more than an officer; he was entrusted with the security detail for numerous dignitaries, including the current and former mayors of Columbia, Daniel J. Rickenmann and Stephen K. Benjamin. His commitment to protecting and serving his community was a cornerstone of his character. Carrizales was known as a mentor, protector, friend, and hero within the Columbia Police Department. His colleagues fondly remember him for the example he set, inspiring others in law enforcement and beyond.

Despite facing health challenges that required hospitalization at Prisma Health prior to his passing, Carrizales’ spirit and dedication never wavered. The outstanding care provided by the Prisma Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit team during this difficult time was acknowledged, illustrating the supportive network that surrounded him.

A Veteran with Pride

Chris Carrizales also wore the uniform of a United States Army Veteran with pride. He served from 1988 to 1992, rising to the rank of Specialist in Dental Radiology, with significant deployments, including during Operation Desert Storm in the Persian Gulf. His military service took him to Germany for 16 years, where he not only fulfilled his duties but also earned multiple military honors, including the Army Service Ribbon and the Army Commendation Medal.

His love for his country and community defined his character. He was awarded several distinguished honors, including the Army Good Conduct Medal and the Bronze Service Star, a testament to his commitment and bravery.

A Loving Legacy

Chris Carrizales leaves behind a loving family. He is survived by his parents, Javier and Celia Carrizales, and his loving wife of 34 years, Gayle Carrizales. His legacy continues through their two children, Blake and Lauren, who will undoubtedly carry forth the values and dedication that their father exemplified throughout his life.

As the Columbia community grieves the loss of such an incredible citizen, they also celebrate the rich tapestry of service and love Chris Carrizales wove into their lives. His memory will serve as a reminder of what it means to serve others, protecting one’s community with an open heart and unwavering determination. In honoring Carrizales, the City of Columbia reaffirms their recognition that officers like him are the beating heart of the community, ensuring safety and security with every beat.
