Columbia, South Carolina, is reflecting on the life of David Earl “Andy” Anderson, a cherished veteran and influential community figure, who passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 86. Born on January 14, 1938, in the small town of Tabor City, Andy left behind a legacy of service, family, and community that will not soon be forgotten.
Andy Anderson kicked off his journey with a vibrant high school sports career, where he earned his nickname, “Andy,” from a supportive coach. His passion for service took him straight to the United States Army following graduation, where he proudly served his country with honor. Over the years, he forged a remarkable path, retiring as Sergeant Major after a career filled with dedication and commendations. His service took him around the world, including stops in Orleans, France, Vietnam, and various military bases across the United States like Fort Jackson and Fort Bragg.
During his time in Vietnam, Andy earned the Bronze Star for his bravery and dedication, solidifying his reputation among both officers and enlisted personnel. He was known as someone who respected the national anthem deeply, always standing and saluting during its performance or whenever the flag passed by in a parade. Respect was paramount in his life—a value he carried through his military career and beyond.
While stationed in Orleans, Andy met his beloved wife, Betty Berry. The couple tied the knot and celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary shortly before his passing on December 22, 2024. Together, they raised two strong daughters, Roxanne and Sherrie, who have each married and continued the family legacy. Andy took great pride in his role as a father and later as “Granddaddy” to five grandchildren: Blake, Hannah, Sarah, Grant, and Liam. Regularly attending their performances and events, he was their most passionate cheerleader, always encouraging them to strive for their dreams.
After retiring from the Army, Andy returned to Columbia, where he took on a new role at the Babcock Center. There, he worked for an impressive 22 years, eventually becoming the Senior Vice President of Support Services. His team was vital in maintaining the facilities and ensuring everything ran smoothly, reflecting his devotion to excellence—a hallmark of his life.
Once he finally retired from his professional career, life for Andy and Betty turned into a grand adventure. They embarked on countless travels, ticking off items from their bucket list, including memorable trips to Bar Harbor, Maine, and Niagara Falls. One of their most cherished experiences included an unforgettable cruise to Alaska, creating lasting memories of their time together.
Beyond his military and professional accomplishments, Andy was profoundly influenced by his mother’s Christian faith, which left an everlasting impact on his family. His legacy is also one of philanthropy; in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to organizations like the National Museum of the US Army, Tunnel to Towers, and Wounded Warrior Project to honor a true patriot and community figure.
Andy’s warmth, courage, and unwavering spirit will be missed by his family, friends, and everyone he touched throughout his inspiring life. Columbia today mourns not just a veteran but a true community leader whose memories will live on through the people he loved.
