Columbia’s Governor’s Mansion: A Hidden Gem Opens Its Doors!

Let’s talk about a sparkling spot right in our own backyards—Columbia, South Carolina! If you’ve not yet had the chance, you’re in for a treat at the South Carolina Governor’s Mansion, a stunning piece of history nestled on Arsenal Hill. With sunshine pouring down and a high of 68°F, it’s the perfect time to explore this exquisite location!

The History Behind the Walls

Originally built in the mid-18th century as faculty quarters for the Arsenal Academy, the Governor’s Mansion has come a long way. It bravely survived a raging fire that obliterated much of the surrounding buildings during General Sherman’s occupation in 1865. In 1868, this majestic structure was officially adapted to serve as the state’s executive mansion.

The mansion is dressed in classic style, flaunting white stucco and boasting 15 magnificent rooms. It’s a doorway into the lives of past governors and the legacies they left behind, with the first floor normally open for public tours from Tuesday to Thursday (with a reservation, of course!).

Our Day at the Mansion

Just last week, we seized the opportunity for a well-planned visit! Approaching the mansion, we were greeted by a uniformed officer who guided us through the security check and up the scenic driveway. One of the highlights was a stunning central fountain that welcomed us to the entrance.

Pushing through the grand doors, we settled in the drawing room, soaking in the decor while waiting for our wonderful guide, Susan Aude. A former news anchor, her love and knowledge of the mansion were nothing short of contagious! As we strolled through the beautifully appointed spaces, we discovered that the first room holds a special place in Aiken’s heart—it was the venue for the first wedding of Strom Thurmond back in 1947!

Art, Music, and More

While wandering the first floor, we stumbled upon treasures donated by past governors and devoted patrons. In one corner, a Steinway grand piano gifted by Governor James Byrnes harks back to musical soirées, including a particularly vibrant night when Leonard Bernstein played well into the wee hours! How’s that for a tune-filled history?

The gardens outside under Governor Henry McMaster’s care are also blossoming, with vibrant plantings including Palmetto palms, fruit trees, and an impressive 5,000 daffodils—a delightful treat for all flower lovers!

Portraits and Memories

As we wandered the corridors, the walls were lined with portfolios of past governors, both blues and reds: think Richard Riley and Nikki Haley! A personal favorite of mine was Robert Hayne, prancing about with his Byronic hairstyle, painted by the illustrious Samuel F.B. Morse. Talk about a palette packed with personalities!

If you’re a bookworm like me, don’t skip the mansion’s enchanting library that features expertly crafted bookcases by local artisan Michael Craig. A beautiful space where each visit feels like a different chapter in South Carolina’s grand narrative.

Mark Your Calendars!

For all the folks hoping to mingle with the Governor, don’t miss the Christmas Open House on December 9 from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. With refreshments on hand and the chance to meet Governor McMaster, it’s bound to be a lovely evening filled with warmth, cheer, and a bit of history.
