Chapin, S.C. – Confirmed EF-1 Tornado Causes Damage Along Lake Murray

The National Weather Service (NWS) has confirmed that an EF-1 tornado struck Chapin, South Carolina, along Lake Murray on Monday night, causing significant damage to the area. The tornado touched down near Lake Tide Drive at approximately 8:43 p.m. and dissipated just six minutes later at 8:49 p.m., reaching peak wind speeds of 95 miles per hour.

The tornado traveled a path of approximately 6.17 miles and was about 200 yards wide, wreaking havoc as it moved northeast. Residents reported substantial damage along Lake Tide Drive, where dozens of trees were uprooted or snapped. The storm’s destructive path included areas such as Highwater Court, Amicks Ferry Road, Lake Tide Drive, Sandbar Road, and Old Bush River Road, making its way close to Chapin Elementary School and crossing Highway 76.

In the aftermath of the tornado, reports indicated multiple downed trees and damaged power lines throughout the region. Lexington County experienced the largest number of power outages, with over 3,000 residents left without electricity at the storm’s peak.

The storm’s intensity began to escalate around 7:30 p.m., impacting not only Chapin but also surrounding areas, including Saluda and Newberry Counties. As the weather conditions worsened, individuals in the area reported severe weather patterns, with one resident mentioning unexpected rain and thunder that prompted them to seek shelter immediately.

In addition to the damage reported along Lake Tide Drive, debris was noted on Lazy Creek Court, Crooked Creek Park, and Old Lexington Highway. The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) crews were deployed to clear the downed trees from the affected roads, working diligently to restore safe travel conditions in the area.

Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries resulting from the tornado, providing some reassurance to the community as cleanup efforts commence. The National Weather Service is actively assessing the damage and plans to provide updates as information becomes available.

The EF-1 tornado classification indicates that the storm produced wind speeds capable of causing moderate damage, primarily to trees and some structures. As residents begin to assess the effects of the tornado, local officials are reminding everyone to remain vigilant in case of further severe weather.

The Community Emergency Response Team teams are in place to assist those affected, and residents are encouraged to report any damages to local authorities. With the clean-up phase just beginning, the focus will now shift towards restoration and support for those impacted by the storm.

For up-to-date information on the weather and recovery efforts, residents are advised to stay tuned to local channels and authority announcements.

As the region begins to recover from this unexpected natural event, the resilience of the Chapin community will be key in overcoming the challenges presented by the tornado’s aftermath.
