Chapin, S.C. – Concern Erupts Over Medical Incident at High School

A medical incident at Chapin High School on Wednesday raised concerns and sparked rumors within the community. The situation started when a school resource officer (SRO) was examining a backpack that had been left in a classroom around 11:30 a.m.

Details of the Incident

According to a report from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department (LCSD), the SRO began feeling chest pains and shortness of breath while going through the contents of the bag. Several staff members also reported feeling dizzy and light-headed after coming into contact with the backpack.

In response to the health concerns, school officials decided to take precautionary measures. They contacted the LCSD, Lexington Fire Department, and the Lexington County Hazardous Materials Unit for assistance. By around 1 p.m., the Hazardous Materials Unit tested the backpack and confirmed that no hazardous materials were present.

Clearance and Response

Chapin High School received the all-clear status at approximately 1:45 p.m. All personnel involved in the search, including the SRO, were given on-site medical attention and were cleared to return to their duties. Additionally, an unrelated incident was reported where emergency medical services (EMS) responded to a student experiencing a medical emergency, although no further details about that student were disclosed.

Rumors of Fentanyl Exposure

In an email sent to the school community by Principal Ed Davis, it was mentioned that there were discussions among residents regarding whether the incident may have involved fentanyl exposure. However, Davis emphasized that there have been no first-hand accounts, police reports, or incident reports indicating any exposure to fentanyl or other hazardous substances. The principal also mentioned that it remains unclear how these rumors started.

As the school community works to understand the day’s events, school officials continue to stress the importance of accurate information to prevent further speculation.
