Chapin Police Continue Search for Murder Suspect

Chapin, S.C. – The police department in Chapin is actively searching for a murder suspect who is wanted for a violent crime in another state. The suspect, identified as Nicholas Hamlett, is wanted for first-degree murder in Tennessee and was reported to be seen near Chapin High School early this morning.

According to police, Hamlett was spotted around 12:30 a.m. in the vicinity of the school. As of 8:30 a.m., authorities stated that he had not yet been captured. Officers are in communication with the Lexington-Richland School District 5 to ensure the safety of students in the area.

The U.S. Marshals Service has stepped in to assist with the search, offering a reward of $5,000 for information leading to Hamlett’s arrest. He is described as 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing about 170 pounds, with blue eyes and brown hair. Police warn that he is considered armed and dangerous and may be using the alias of Brandon Andrade.

In response to the ongoing situation, local schools have implemented a modified secure status. This means that while students and parents can enter and exit the buildings, outdoor activities are not allowed until further notice. As of 9:13 a.m., the schools affected include Chapin Elementary Eaglets, Chapin Intermediate School, and Chapin High School.

Officials from the school district reassured parents through a message issued on social media and via email, stating, “At this time, all School District Five schools are operating on a normal schedule.” They indicated more law enforcement presence will be seen on school grounds while the situation develops. The district is keeping a close watch and will transition schools to a lockdown status if needed.

Local authorities have asked residents to remain vigilant and report any sightings or information about Nicholas Hamlett by calling 911.
