Chapin Police Search for Murder Suspect from Tennessee

CHAPIN — A man wanted for murder in Tennessee has been sighted in Chapin, South Carolina, prompting local authorities to warn residents to be on the lookout. The suspect, Nicholas Wayne Hamlett, is 45 years old, has a salt-and-pepper beard, and is considered armed and dangerous.

The Chapin Police Department issued a public alert as families celebrated Halloween, advising them to stay vigilant. According to police, Hamlett is wanted not only for murder but also for a parole violation. He may have family connections in the area, raising concerns about his potential whereabouts.

Details of the Incident in Tennessee

Authorities say Hamlett’s murder charge stems from an incident on October 18 in Monroe County, Tennessee. In a twist, Hamlett allegedly called 911, pretending to be injured in a bear attack while hiking. When responders arrived, they discovered a deceased man, but Hamlett had already fled using a false name.

As the search for Hamlett continued, he was spotted near Chapin High School late on November 1. Police confirmed that heavy law enforcement presence remains in place throughout the town, with officers dedicated to locating the suspect.

Community Impact

As of 9 a.m. on November 1, three local schools — Chapin Elementary, Chapin Intermediate, and Chapin High School — have implemented a modified secure status. This means that while outdoor activities are prohibited, students are still allowed to enter and exit the buildings.

The Chapin Police emphasized that they are working closely with the U.S. Marshals Service in the ongoing search for Hamlett. They reminded everyone in the area to exercise caution and stay aware of their surroundings until the suspect is captured.

The police department earlier posted on Facebook, encouraging everyone to “remain vigilant” and to report any suspicious activity. Residents are urged to take this matter seriously, given the potential threat Hamlett poses.

As law enforcement continues their efforts, the community watches closely, hoping for a swift resolution to this alarming situation.
