In a somber turn of events, the community of Chapin, South Carolina is grieving the loss of a treasured member, Gary David LaBruyere, who peacefully passed away on the evening of Saturday, July 6, 2024. Gary, aged 77, was surrounded by his loving wife and two sons at the time of his passing, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and devotion.
Gary was born on August 24, 1946, in St. Louis, Missouri, and spent his formative years in Jackson, South Carolina. A standout athlete during his high school years, he excelled in baseball, basketball, and most notably, football. Despite a setback that prevented him from pursuing college football, Gary found joy in refereeing high school games and later in life, witnessed his own sons partake in sports.
After earning a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of South Carolina, Gary dedicated 38 years to Westinghouse’s nuclear fuel division before retiring. In his leisure time, he found solace in gardening, woodworking, and cherished moments spent at Lake Murray, indulging in activities like fishing and boating.
Not just a sports enthusiast and engineer, Gary was a devoted Christian whose faith journey began in his early 30s at the insistence of his wife, Lynda. This initial act of attending church with his family fostered a deep connection to his Christian beliefs, leading him to serve as a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Chapin Baptist Church.
Gary is survived by his loving wife, sons, grandchildren, and brother. His family will be hosting a visitation and memorial service at Chapin Baptist Church on Friday, August 2, 2024, to honor and celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to JAARS, an organization close to Gary’s heart.
Chapin mourns the loss of a remarkable individual whose kindness, faith, and love for his family and community left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Gary LaBruyere’s memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of those he touched.
