Chapin High School Staff Experience Medical Incident Amid Fentanyl Rumors

Chapin, S.C. – A recent incident at Chapin High School has raised concerns and sparked rumors in the community. On Wednesday morning, school staff experienced lightheadedness and other symptoms after examining a backpack that had been left in a classroom.

Incident Details

Principal Ed Davis sent out a message to parents and guardians on Thursday, explaining what transpired. Around 11:30 a.m., a school resource officer (SRO) began searching the abandoned backpack. Shortly after starting the search, the SRO reported chest pains and shortness of breath. Other staff members who were near the bag also reported feeling dizzy and light-headed.

Safety Precautions Taken

In response to these symptoms, school officials decided to take precautionary measures. They notified the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department (LCSD), as well as the Lexington Fire Department and the Hazardous Materials Unit. By 1:00 p.m., the Hazardous Materials Unit arrived and tested the backpack. Fortunately, they found no hazardous materials inside.

Chapin High School received the all-clear status at around 1:45 p.m. Principal Davis reported that all staff who had been involved in the search received medical attention and were cleared to resume their duties without any lasting effects.

Addressing Community Concerns

Although everything turned out to be safe, rumors began circulating in the community suggesting that the symptoms might be linked to fentanyl exposure. Principal Davis took the time to clarify this in his email by noting that there were no police reports or any first-hand accounts indicating that anyone was exposed to fentanyl or other hazardous materials.

As the school seeks to get to the bottom of how the rumors started, they emphasized their commitment to the safety and well-being of students and staff. Additionally, there was an unrelated medical emergency involving a student that required EMS but further details have not been released.

Conclusion

This incident has highlighted the importance of communication and transparency in schools, especially when rumors can quickly spread. Chapin High School remains dedicated to providing a safe environment for all students and staff as they navigate this situation.
