A troubling incident unfolded at Chapin High School on Wednesday morning, causing alarm and sparking rumors among parents and community members. The situation began when a school resource officer (SRO) was searching a backpack that had been left unattended in a classroom around 11:30 a.m..
According to a report from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department (LCSD), as the SRO went through the bag, he suddenly experienced chest pains and shortness of breath. Following this, several other staff members reported feeling dizzy and light-headed after coming into contact with the backpack.
Chapin High School’s Principal, Ed Davis, communicated with the school community via email on Thursday. He noted that school officials acted out of an abundance of caution by reaching out to local authorities, including LCSD, the Lexington Fire Department, and the Lexington County Hazardous Materials Unit. “We took the precautionary steps necessary to ensure everyone’s safety,” Davis stated.
The Hazardous Materials Unit arrived on scene and conducted a thorough examination of the backpack by 1:00 p.m. They found no hazardous materials inside. By 1:45 p.m., the school had received the all-clear status and resumed normal activities. The SRO and all staff who experienced symptoms received on-site medical attention and were cleared to return to their duties.
Furthermore, it was reported that there was an unrelated incident involving a student who required medical assistance. Details surrounding this situation have not yet been disclosed.
In his email, Principal Davis addressed the circulating rumors linked to possible fentanyl exposure on campus, emphasizing that there have been no verified reports or evidence supporting this claim. “There are no first-hand accounts, police reports, or incident reports stating anyone was exposed to fentanyl,” he clarified. Davis expressed uncertainty about how the rumors began but reassured the community that the school is focused on maintaining a safe environment for both students and staff.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to stay informed and reach out to the school with any questions or concerns regarding this situation. The safety and well-being of the students and staff remain the top priority at Chapin High School.
