Chapin, South Carolina – Medical Incident Leads to Concerns at Local High School

On Wednesday morning, a medical incident at Chapin High School stirred up worries among the community after some staff members reported feeling unwell while investigating a backpack. The situation unfolded around 11:30 a.m. when a school resource officer (SRO) began searching a backpack that had been left in a classroom.

Staff Members Report Symptoms

As the SRO went through the bag, he suddenly complained of chest pains and shortness of breath. Several other staff members nearby also experienced dizziness and light-headedness. Prompted by these symptoms, school officials acted quickly, notifying local authorities including the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, Lexington Fire Department, and the Lexington County Hazardous Materials Unit.

All-Clear After Hazardous Materials Check

The hazardous materials team arrived on the scene and tested the bag at approximately 1 p.m. They reported finding no hazardous materials inside, giving Chapin High School an all-clear status shortly after 1:45 p.m. All staff members who experienced symptoms received on-site medical attention and were allowed to return to their regular duties.

Unrelated Medical Emergency Occurs

In a separate incident that same day, emergency medical services were called to help a student who was experiencing a medical emergency. Details about that student’s condition have yet to be shared with the public.

Rumors of Fentanyl Exposure Addressed

Following the incident, rumors began circulating within the community about potential fentanyl exposure connected to the backpack. In response, Principal Ed Davis sent out an email on Thursday clarifying that there were no reports of fentanyl or any hazardous materials present. He stressed there were no first-hand accounts or police reports indicating anyone had been exposed.

Community Reassured

Principal Davis also noted that it remains unclear how these rumors originated. He reassured parents and community members that the safety and well-being of students and staff is the school’s top priority.

As of now, Chapin High School is working to maintain a safe environment for everyone, and there are no ongoing threats to the school community. The situation has highlighted the importance of clear communication between the school and parents, especially in times of uncertainty.
