Chapin, SC – The local community is in mourning with the passing of Michael “Mike” Neal, an esteemed leader and devoted family man, who died recently at the age of 78. His contributions to the community, church, and family are fondly remembered by many.
Born in Columbia, SC, to George Irby Neal and Alma Martin Neal, Mike grew up in Eau Claire, SC, where he developed his lifelong passions and strong family values. He graduated from Eau Claire High School in 1962 and furthered his education at Richland Technical College. Mike’s dedication to service began early as he proudly served in the Air National Guard.
In 1966, Mike met Evelyn Anne Johnson, a student at Columbia College from North Augusta. Their connection was immediate, leading to a loving union that lasted for 59 years. The couple first lived in Eau Claire before settling into their forever home near Chapin, SC, where they raised their two daughters, Anne Michelle Hunt and Laurie Elizabeth Matthews. Anne is married to Lee Hunt, and they have two children, Anna-Neal and Daniel. Laurie is married to Ron Matthews and has four children: Trey, Emmie, Maddie, and Derrick.
Mike was known for his deep commitment to his faith and community service. He was actively involved in his first church, College Place United Methodist, and upon moving to Chapin, he continued his dedication at Chapin Christian Community Church, formerly Chapin UMC. There, he held various leadership roles including President of the Methodist Men and leader of the Christian Fellowship Sunday School Class. Mike’s engagement didn’t stop at leadership; he was actively involved with church committees and spent significant time working with youth groups, chaperoning numerous trips.
Outside of his church activities, Mike enjoyed hobbies like hunting and fishing. He was an active member of Dr. Carroll Pinner’s Hunt Club and the Peak Coffee Club, where he shared camaraderie with fellow sportsmen and friends. He was also involved in civic activities with the Mid Carolina Lion’s Club and contributed to community initiatives through the Peak Community Center.
In terms of his career, Mike worked as a Superintendent at Congaree Construction for 39 years, where he built a reputation for leadership and expertise. After retiring, he continued to contribute to the construction industry for an additional six years at Edcon Construction.
Despite his numerous commitments, Mike’s true legacy lies in his unwavering love for his family and friends and his faithful service to his Heavenly Father. His presence in the community will surely be missed.
A funeral service is scheduled for Sunday, February 16, 2025, at 3:00 PM at Chapin Christian Community Church, located at 415 Lexington Avenue, Chapin, SC 29036. Following the funeral service, visitation will provide family and friends an opportunity to pay their respects. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Chapin Christian Community Church – Missions to honor Mike’s lasting impact in the community and his dedication to service.
