Historic Cayce Grammar School Transformed into Hattie's Crossing Residential Development

Cayce, S.C. – A New Chapter Unfolds at Cayce Grammar School

In the heart of Lexington County, an old school is getting a new lease on life! The historic Cayce Grammar School, which has served the community for over a century, is being transformed into a lovely residential development that pays tribute to its rich past. The project, aptly named Hattie’s Crossing, will add twelve charming homes to the area while also celebrating the legacy of Miss Hattie Derrenbacher, recognized as the very first teacher in Cayce.

A Leap Back in Time

To understand the significance of this transformation, we need to hop back to 1913 when Miss Hattie opened up her home as a school. Can you imagine a classroom around a cozy fireplace? Andy Thomas, who serves as the curator of the Cayce Historical Museum, painted a heartwarming picture of Miss Hattie’s early days as an educator. “She had a humble beginning with just nine students ranging from grades 1 to 7. The kitchen became their classroom, and that’s where she began her journey in teaching,” he shared.

For two years, Miss Hattie nurtured young minds in her warm abode, but as her student group grew, she knew it was time to expand. In 1915, the school moved to a larger location, eventually becoming what we now recognize as the Cayce Grammar School.

A New Beginnings

Fast forward to today, and the Cayce Grammar School building has been quiet since it last closed its doors in 1976. Now, that space is gearing up for a fresh start. The upcoming Hattie’s Crossing residential development will feature homes ranging from 1,200 to 1,600 square feet, perfect for families looking to settle in a community with great historical value.

Continuing the Legacy

Brenda Hafner, superintendent of Lexington Two, shared her thoughts on the importance of carrying on the vision that Miss Hattie had for education. “Reading and math are foundational, but even more than that, it’s about building life skills and character. Miss Hattie held her students accountable to be good citizens, and that’s a value we strive to instill in our students today,” Hafner noted.

This upcoming development isn’t just about building homes; it’s about revitalizing the space and honoring those who paved the way. “It’s essential to commemorate those leaders and education pioneers like Miss Hattie. Her approach to education has profoundly impacted our community,” said Thomas.

What to Expect at Hattie’s Crossing

As part of the development plans for Hattie’s Crossing, there will be sidewalks along the property lines, creating a friendly environment for families to stroll and connect. Plus, a homeowners’ association is set to ensure that the beauty of the community is preserved for everyone to enjoy.

The transformation of the old Cayce Grammar School into Hattie’s Crossing is a fantastic development both for current and future residents of Cayce. Not only will it bring new homes, but it will also keep the spirit of Miss Hattie alive – a true testament to the impact of education in building a stronger community.

As the construction progresses, the residents can look forward to a new chapter for this historic site—one that cherishes the past while welcoming fresh faces and families into the community. Here’s to Hattie’s Crossing and all the wonderful memories yet to be made!
