Columbia News: Bus Crash Injures University of South Carolina Students
Charter Bus Carrying USC Students Crashes in Mississippi
A charter bus carrying more than 50 University of South Carolina students crashed in Mississippi, sending 10 students to the hospital, including one who was airlifted by helicopter. The incident occurred on April 5 on I-10 in Hancock County at mile marker 13.
Details of the Accident
According to a spokesperson from the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the bus experienced a blown front tire, causing the driver to lose control. The students, who were members and guests of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity South Carolina Alpha chapter, were en route to a formal event in New Orleans at the time of the crash.
Bay St. Louis Police Chief Toby Schwartz described the harrowing scene, stating that the bus skidded for over half a mile on the interstate, with all wheels briefly lifting off the ground at one point. The driver was ejected from the bus, and a student took control of the steering wheel until the bus came to a stop.
Injuries and Response
Out of the 56 students on board, 10 sustained injuries, with one student and the driver being airlifted to receive medical care. The driver is reported to be in critical condition. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, with the bus operated by Dixon Motor Xpress LLC out of Chester.
The University of South Carolina expressed its support for the affected students, working closely with authorities to provide assistance. The National Sig Phi Epsilon fraternity also issued a statement, emphasizing the safety and well-being of the students.
Support and Investigation
“Our thoughts go out to the students involved in the accident and those affected by it,” a university spokesperson said. The fraternity commended the quick actions of the student who took control of the bus and pledged to collaborate with the university and local authorities in supporting the students’ recovery.
As investigations continue into the cause of the crash, USC remains focused on ensuring the students receive the necessary care and support during this challenging time.
