New Buc-ee’s Location Approved for Hardeeville

HARDEEVILLE — The popular travel center Buc-ee’s is set to make its entrance into the Lowcountry, following the preliminary approval from the Hardeeville City Council on November 7, 2024. The new location will be situated off Exit 8 of Interstate 95, which is strategically placed near both Hilton Head and Savannah.

What to Expect from Buc-ee’s

Buc-ee’s, a Texas-based chain famously recognized for its enormous convenience stores, will bring a variety of amenities to the area. The only other Buc-ee’s location in South Carolina is approximately 165 miles away in Florence. With a well-promoted reputation for having the cleanest bathrooms, Buc-ee’s attracts travelers with an extensive menu featuring items such as chopped brisket sandwiches, tacos, kolaches, and a selection of snacks including fresh roasted pecans, cashews, and almonds.

The Development Process

City officials anticipate finalizing the agreements by November 21, 2024. Scott Ratcliff, Buc-ee’s director of engineering, emphasized that the intention behind establishing a location in Hardeeville is to attract drivers along the southern I-95 corridor. Ratcliff stated, “We aim to pull in weary travelers.”

As observed in Florence, Buc-ee’s locations tend to attract large crowds, often resulting in lines for their facilities and food stations. A significant aspect of Buc-ee’s is its extensive parking and gas pump facilities, which position the store as a convenient stop for those traveling along I-95. Notably, the store does not allow big-rig trucks, ensuring a family-friendly environment.

Economic Impact on Hardeeville

The establishment of Buc-ee’s in Hardeeville is expected to bring considerable economic benefits. According to city officials, the new location will create around 200 jobs. The chain is known for its competitive pay, offering hourly wages from $16 for cashiers and stockers, to $20 for bathroom attendants, and over $100,000 for managerial positions. With further responsibilities, general managers can earn upwards of $225,000 annually.

In addition to job creation, the new site will generate new property, hospitality, and sales taxes for the Hardeeville community. This financial boost aligns well with ongoing improvements along a 10-mile stretch of I-95, where the South Carolina Department of Transportation (DOT) is engaged in major enhancements, including widening the highway and upgrading bridges.

Looking Toward the Future

While Buc-ee’s plans to move forward with the project, they must first acquire the land and navigate town permits before construction can start. Mayor Harry Williams expressed optimism, stating that the Buc-ee’s rest stop could open by 2028, coinciding with the completion of the DOT’s I-95 improvement project.

The anticipation around Buc-ee’s arrival marks a significant development for the region, especially as Jasper County recently emerged as the fastest-growing county in South Carolina. This growth is partly influenced by an influx of new residents in Hardeeville, Ridgeland, and Sun City. The introduction of Buc-ee’s is expected to further invigorate this thriving area.

For travelers and residents alike, Buc-ee’s in Hardeeville is set to become a vibrant hub, offering both convenience and local economic stimulation.
