Columbia and West Columbia Issue Boil Water Advisories Following Water Main Breaks

Residents of Columbia and West Columbia may want to pull out that trusty kettle or pot as city officials have issued boil water advisories for certain areas following recent water main breaks. This precautionary measure aims to keep everyone safe from potential bacterial contamination.

Columbia Residents on Alert

In Columbia, the advisory primarily affects customers on Coleman St, specifically from Bonham to Kilbourne. This action was taken due to a six-inch water main break that has raised concerns about the water quality in that sector. If you live in the affected area and notice loss of water, low pressure, or even discolored water, the advice is clear: boil your water for at least one minute before using it for drinking or cooking.

It is also crucial to note that any ice made from unboiled water should be tossed out. While Columbia Water staff is actively working on resolving the issue, residents should remain vigilant. The boil water advisory will remain in effect until additional notice is provided.

To stay in the loop, customers are encouraged to check for updates through the site: local.nixle.com/register or call the Columbia Water office at (803) 545-3300.

West Columbia Has Its Own Issues

West Columbia, where city officials have also issued a boil water advisory due to a separate water main break. Affected areas in West Columbia include those experiencing loss of water pressure, cloudy water, or sediment. Here as well, residents are asked to boil water vigorously for at least one minute before consuming it.

Residents should flush their taps until water runs clear and no sediment is visible before boiling for safety. As with Columbia, any ice formed from unboiled water should not be used for drinking. The boil water advisory in West Columbia will remain in effect until lifted, so it’s important to stay informed.

For updates, customers can check the City of West Columbia’s website at www.westcolumbiasc.gov or contact City Hall customer service at 803-791-1880 during business hours. For emergencies after hours, the same number connects to an answering service.

Good News for Some!

On a brighter note, Columbia Water has lifted the boil water advisory for residents on Adella Street and Anna Lane in Richland County. After significant flushing of the system and thorough bacteriological testing, the results showed no contamination. Earlier advisories were put in place due to a significant drop in water pressure in the distribution system, but residents can now enjoy safe water again.

For anyone wishing to receive future notices about water advisories or other updates, signing up at local.nixle.com/register is a smart move. Additionally, the City of Columbia Customer Care Call Center is available at 545-3300 for further inquiries.
