Columbia, S.C. Hosts Empowering Leadership Conference to Support Parents in Education

Empowered Parents Gathering

Columbia, S.C. Welcomes Parents Back to School with Leadership Conference

In a heartwarming gathering this past Saturday, parents in Columbia, South Carolina, came together at Trinity Baptist Church for an enlightening Back-to-School Parent Leadership Conference. This annual event, which made its much-anticipated return to the Midlands, aimed at equipping parents with knowledge and resources to better support their children who may be facing academic challenges.

A Day Full of Learning and Connection

Dozens of parents filled the church hall, eager to discover essential educational resources available within the community. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as attendees engaged with various vendors and participated in informative seminars. The goal was clear: to provide parents with the necessary tools to help their kids thrive in school.

It’s really important that we reach out to the community and give them the tools that they need in order to meet the achievement standards,” shared J.T. McLawhorn, President of the Columbia Urban League. This embrace of community spirit shines a light on the commitment to ensure every student has a fair chance at success.

Understanding the Education System

The event featured a variety of panel discussions tackling important topics such as Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 plans. Juanita Dean Bates, Program Director with the Columbia Urban League, explained, “We have a panel talking about IEPs and 504 plans and how to navigate that system within the school system. We have someone doing a seminar on bridging the gap with autism.” It became clear that many parents are keen to learn about these essential tools to support their children, especially those with disabilities or special needs.

Before retirement, Regina Williams, a seasoned educator and now a Columbia Urban League Parent Navigator, shared her own journey. She emphasized the importance of understanding the education system, recalling when she first realized her daughter needed additional support during her elementary school years. “Helping parents and showing them, don’t ever give up on our child,” Williams advised, reinforcing the message that there is always hope and a way forward for every child.

Creating a Supportive Community

The support doesn’t stop at the conference. Participants left with an array of new contacts and a sense of togetherness that can only come from parents rallying around a common cause—ensuring the best for their children. The gathering was designed not just as a one-off event, but as a stepping stone toward fostering a lasting community network.

Looking to the future, the Columbia Urban League plans to host this annual conference again in 2025. This initiative aims to keep parents informed about educational tools and resources, empowering them to stay engaged in their child’s education journey.

Staying Connected

The conference was a wonderful reminder of the power of parents coming together to support each other and their children, encouraging a culture where education is a collaborative effort. By acknowledging the challenges students may face and providing the necessary resources, the community of Columbia is helping to build a brighter future for the next generation.

So, whether you are a parent of a child needing extra help or simply looking to stay ahead in your child’s education, know there are dedicated resources and a vibrant community ready to support you!
